𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗛 𝗩𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥: 𝗔 𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗣𝗨𝗧𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗚𝗘
To my international friends:
Before forming any opinion on the current Thailand–Cambodia tensions, it would be nice if you can take a few minutes to read this brief history. This will give you the context needed to understand why this region matters and why today’s events cannot be separated from yesterday’s struggles.
Preah Vihear is more than a temple, it is a symbol of Khmer identity and a focal point of one of the longest-running border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand. Although the current tensions are not solely about Preah Vihear, the temple lies along this sensitive border and has often been drawn into dispute. Below are key milestones supported by verifiable sources from international news, scholarly publications, and ICJ records:
𝟭𝟵𝟬𝟰–𝟭𝟵𝟬𝟳: 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
During the French protectorate over Cambodia, border treaties were signed between France and Siam (present-day Thailand) in 1904 and 1907. A joint commission carried out surveys, and maps from this process 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗗 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗛 𝗩𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬. Thailand (then Siam) later disputed these maps, claiming that the temple was theirs. After Cambodia gained independence in 1953, Thai troops moved into the Preah Vihear area, asserting claims over the temple. This created the first major diplomatic standoff between the two nations. Tensions simmered rather than disappeared, setting the stage for a legal showdown. Source: (Standford University)
𝟭𝟵𝟱𝟵–𝟭𝟵𝟲𝟮: 𝗜𝗖𝗝 𝗥𝗨𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚
Unable to resolve the dispute diplomatically, Cambodia filed a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 1959. In 1962, the ICJ ruled that Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia and ordered Thailand to withdraw its forces. Cambodia celebrated the ruling as a decisive victory and believed the matter was settled, but for Thailand, the dispute was far from over. (Source: ICJ)

Decades later, the temple again became a flashpoint when UNESCO recognized Preah Vihear as a World Heritage Site. Cambodia celebrated this as a cultural victory after decades of closure, but the recognition unexpectedly reignited tensions. Thailand reacted with protests and military build-up, leading to border clashes—an issue thought to have been resolved for nearly 50 years. (Source: Martin Wagener)
𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟭: 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦
Far from calming down, tensions escalated. Exchanges of artillery fire in February and April resulted in losses on both sides and displaced thousands of civilians, showing how unresolved issues can erupt with devastating consequences. (Source: International Committee of the Red Cross)
𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟯: 𝗜𝗖𝗝 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
As a nation committed to peace and justice, Cambodia once again turned to the rule of law by seeking clarification at the ICJ. On November 11, 2013, the Court reaffirmed Cambodia’s sovereignty over the temple and adjacent areas. Thailand accepted the ruling, but Preah Vihear remains a sensitive point in Cambodia–Thailand relations. (Source: ICJ)

They say history is the best guide to understanding both present and future. After reading these milestones, what do you think really happened in 2025? Who do you believe might have lit the first spark? Your best judgment will lead you to an answer that history itself already whispers loudly.
𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗛 𝗩𝗜𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪?
Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a proud symbol of Khmer heritage, recently came under real physical threat before the ceasefire took effect. It is heartbreaking that such a sacred place, meant to unite cultures and celebrate humanity’s shared legacy, became under serious threat. Cambodia would never harm its own heritage; this temple is part of our identity, our soul. Its suffering is a tragedy that should awaken the world’s conscience and inspire a collective call for lasting peace.
Thank you for taking the time to read and reflect!
If you are a real Cambodian, you must this with the world! One voice at a time!
