Power mind

We all go to school, where we Learn subject like science and history. We also develop various skills, mostly related to subjects but also some life skills. Strangely, however very few people I meet have ever been taught how to learn. We talk about literacy and numeracy, but what about "learnacy"?

When I talk to audience I ask them which they think is the most important part of their body when it comes to learning. Not surprisingly they point to their heads. I then ask them how much time they spent at school or college or business school learning about the minds and there is an embarrass, and increasingly these days a worried silence.People are beginning to understand the real importance of the concept of learnacy.

The situation is similar across organization of all kinds. There is much talk of global marketplace, performance, cost-cuting, knowledge management, culture, values, leadership development, and so on. But in most cases how you might use your mind to learn to perform more effectively is simply not on the agenda.

It is as if there is a conspiracy of silence when it comes to learning to learn. We invest huge sum of money in business processes, in research and development, in computer system and management training, but almost nothing in how the mind of employees and colleagues work, Or indeed how our own mind functions.

Nevertheless talk to most managers today and it is the quality of their people that is apparently critical to their success. The old ingredients like price and product are taking second place to the way your people deal with customers.

This unique resource, peoples ability to learn is arguably the only source of competitive advantage naturally available to all organizations and it is so often ignore.

But our understanding of our brains work has advanced along with extraordinary speed of technical change, so that common sense and science may well have caught up with each other at last.

Take time to reflect on the knowledge that is lying hidden beneath the surface of your life you we be able to power up your own mind and the mind of those with whom you work and live.

PEOPLE, PROCESS AND PRODUCTS

One of the best business book i’ve read this year is "Good to Great” By JIN COLLINS In it a wealthy entrepreneur called Marcus goes around helping entrepreneurs to fix their businesses and make them bigger and more profitable. He invests his own money. By now you all know that a "profit" (in simple financial terms) is the money earned after you subtract all the costs of producing AND selling your product or service.
To make sure a business makes a "profit," there are three things Marcus always emphasizes:
# People.
# Product.
# Process.
When a business fails, it's usually because one or more of the above have failed. When a business is a success, it is because all three ingredients are working well. It really is that simple...
Lemme break down for you!
# People
If you have skilled people who know what they're doing and are well motivated to deliver for the business with passion, that's central.
In the most successful companies in the world, they don't talk of people, they talk of talent. A successful organization must have "talent" in its ranks. The more "talent," the better it is.
Talent doesn't come from having a position, it comes from having skills. It's what you are trained to do.
Having a title of "General Manager," "Chairman," "CEO" or even "Minister" means nothing if you don't have any skills. You cannot operate above your skills simply because you have a title! It's remarkable how many people believe that a promotion to a top position somehow imbues them with skills they did not previously have.
# Product
You may have a great team of talented people but that's meaningless unless you have (or your talented team develops) a product or service that customers want and are willing to pay for. It's not as straightforward as it might seem. What makes a good product? Packaging, pricing... (Your turn: what else?)
# Process
Last but definitely not least, having the best and will not be enough unless you have (operational procedures) that enable you to (efficiently and effectively) raise money, build a business, manage cash flow, go to market, sell your product, listen to your customers, etc.
# Process is what enables you to make profits! (And not just today, but going forward.)
On "Good to Great" you'll find that most entrepreneurs are highly talented and have a great product but they're clueless about putting in place proper processes. Sometimes you will feel like crying when you see the anguish of some of these entrepreneurs as they fail to grasp the challenge of process. It's an amazing book and I urge you to read it even if you don't own a business.
Everything on entrepreneurship really revolves around:
# People.
# Product.
# Process.
To be honest, this applies to any organization, even if it's "not for profit." I could say it even applies to government administration ( national or county).
Now it's your turn: tell me about the "process" in business that you find most challenging and, how you're tackling it, if you are!

Sometimes, just building a better mousetrap is all you need to make your first million.

Great piece

It's good to stay current with the news but obsessing over what you can't control just steals your focus and energy from what you can .

A STORY OF Tuskys Supermarkets AND Nakumatt Holdings THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND.!

Mzee Joram Kamau - The founder of Tuskys who used to work for Nakumatt (80's when it was Nakuru Matreses) as a driver and as a retirement reward for long loyal good service, the Nakuru Mattresses guys helped him start a shop in a remote village 'Rongai Self Service' (This was the first self service store in that village and everybody was excited).

The old man and his boys worked so hard and out of that, they set up Tusker Matreses in down town Nairobi which is today's Tuskys.

Look who's running to who for help many years down the road. (For those who don't know what's happening.... Tuskys has taken over the management of Nakumatt Supermarkets)

To extend the generosity once extended to him, Mzee Joram Kamau helped his brother and his sons set up their own shop by handing over to them the same Rongai Matresses when (Tuskys) grew big. Today that brother's empire is called Naivas. Today that same self service shop gets handed down to members of the family who are serious about venturing into retail.

Don't despise humble beginnings... Usidharau your driver, house help, watchman or even that maize roasting guy you pass on your way to your 'well paying job'

Their breakthrough might be the straw your kids will be clinging on in the future
