In 1905, he established his workshop in Besançon, France. Initially specializing in engraving watch cases made of precious metals, he moved to Paris in 1911 and acquired the prestigious watchmaker Breguet, securing an important position as a supplier of watches and jewelry to top jewelers in Place Vendôme. However, his talent sparked a revolution in electric clocks. In the 1920s, he collaborated with engineer Marius Lavet to launch the battery-powered electric clock brand “ATO.” At the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts (Art Deco Exhibition), he won the Grand Prix. The electric clock, featuring a glass case designed by René Lalique, took the world by storm as a cutting-edge design of the time.
Then in 1930, his inventive spirit created a sensation in the watch industry. He obtained a patent for the sliding automatic winding mechanism known as “Rolls,” which was released by Blancpain.
Patent No. 704,910
The movement itself, supported by bearings, slides up and down between two rails installed inside the case, winding the mainspring in accordance with the movement of the wrist. Léon At granted the manufacturing and exclusive sales rights of this patent to Blancpain, which introduced it to the world in the 1930s as the “Blancpain Rolls.” However, it was only available for ladies. Blancpain commissioned Léon to create a men’s watch prototype, but that timepiece never made it to market.
Yet, that timepiece exists here. Manufactured in 1930 by Léon At himself in his French workshop, it features an 18-karat solid gold and metal case, with the French 18-karat solid hallmark engraved. It has been fully serviced at the Blancpain headquarters. An authenticity archive is included. This is the finest piece available.
