Cecilia Vicuña — Quipu Womb

Vicuña describes Quipu Womb as more than just an artwork; it is a "poem in space." The installation consists of over 50 large strands of unspun wool, dyed red, gracefully flowing down from a metal ring suspended high above, creating an immersive and captivating experience. Upon closer inspection, one can observe that each cord is adorned with different knots rhythmically spaced along its length. This meticulous arrangement serves as a reference to multiple concepts, including the symbolism of the interconnected energies, flows, and cycles of nature.

Vicuña's creative process draws inspiration from Indigenous weaving practices, ritualistic traditions, and a deep commitment to environmental activism. Through Quipu Womb and similar works, the artist explores the profound significance of the quipu—an ancient system of knotting rope that originated from the Inca and Andean cultures. Traditionally, the quipu was believed to serve as an alternative to written language, allowing for the recording and communication of information through the arrangement of knots. Vicuña acknowledges the historical context and attributes the invention of the quipu to female ingenuity, highlighting the significant contributions of women throughout history.

By integrating the quipu into her artistic practice, Vicuña aims to honor and preserve Indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage. The use of red-dyed wool and the representation of menstrual blood symbolize the life-giving and transformative power associated with femininity. Through her work, Vicuña bridges the past and the present, inviting viewers to contemplate the intertwined relationship between language, art, history, and the inherent wisdom found within Indigenous traditions. Quipu Womb stands as a testament to the resilience, creativity, and wisdom of women, both in ancient civilizations and in contemporary society.

Captivating Textile Art: Weaving Fragile Narratives and Inner Landscapes

★༄𒊹︎Nelly Agassi, a visionary artist, explores the delicate interplay between the neural depths and the public realm, where fabrics become the vessel for her artistic expression. Through her poignant work, she unravels the intricate texture of inner signals, transcending verbal language.

★༄𒊹︎ In a society battered and bruised, Agassi seeks the pulse of our private selves, reaching for the intimate, subtle beats that resonate within. Whether amidst an indifferent or accidental audience, she becomes immersed in her own actions, skillfully traversing the layers of garments, built environments, and social rituals. Her practice, devoid of pathos or grandeur, weaves a humble choreography from ordinary acts of tying, sewing, wrapping, and cutting. The body takes center stage, exposing vulnerability through the means of protection.

★༄𒊹︎ Agassi seamlessly blends performance, fiber-work, choreography, and installations, forging connections between the personal and the social, the intimate and the public. In her exploration, she examines the fragile intersections where the fluid, vulnerable interior meets the vast expanses of the exterior.

★༄𒊹︎ Agassi's engagement with pain is both precise and exacting, eschewing self- or social mythologies. Her language, economical and sensual, allows the inner evolution of images that reveal personal narratives.

★༄𒊹︎ Guided by an intrinsic sensitivity, Agassi's work deftly entwines inner processes, maintaining a delicate balance. She meticulously plans, creating conceptual frameworks with clear temporal and spatial boundaries, while leaving room for the suggestive act to unfold in all its force. Simplicity and punctuality form the backbone of her practice.

★༄𒊹︎ Through her art, Agassi celebrates the profound relationship between textiles and the world of creativity, reminding us that fabrics have the power to transcend mere function and become powerful conduits of emotion, narrative, and connection.

Constellations, as series of glass panels perforated with irregular patterns of holes and cracks, originated last year when Zhao Zhao decided to conduct an experiment involving gunshots and glass, a difficult undertaking in China where with very few exceptions the ownership of fi****ms is illegal. Intrigued by the idea of utilizing the velocity of bullets to create works of art in a carefully controlled manner, Zhao Zhao subsequently likened the glittering glass panels to constellations, any reference to astronomy having been far from his mind at the beginning of the project.

Contrasting with the glass Constellations are the Sky paintings, a seeming anomaly in his highly diverse practice. The context for these lush sky studies that verge on abstraction is Beijing where "blue-sky days" are exceedingly rare, more common being the grayish yellow of heavily polluted air. Zhao Zhao' s sky paintings are the work of somebody who seldom if ever sees a truly blue sky in his day to day existence in Beijing.

weavingworlds®️ we want to go back to the origins of classic waving patterns. It’s not a secret we love all about textile production and the history behind it.

The history behind the origin of gingham is as chequered as the fabric itself. Many countries claim gingham fabric to be a staple of their own textile history and culture. Its widespread use throughout the world is due to it being inexpensive to produce, easy to wash, durable and simple in design.

The origin of the word is interesting since the fabric was originally manufactured in the previously Dutch-colonised Malaysia and Indonesia yet also in India. It was exported to Europe in the 17th Century and later to the USA before local manufacture was set up in the 18th Century. The word appears to derive from the Malaysian word genggang meaning ‘striped’ and adopted by the Dutch.

It’s always interesting to learn about what we wear and hopefully change our perception as a transformative intent.

Certainty / Entropy — Aiko Tezuka

Contemporary symbols are sprinkled over the traditional pattern as a part of flowers. Tezuka incorporated symbols – such as the at (@) and copyright (©) symbols, biohazard symbol (representing environmental risks), organic food symbol and the peace sign – which are at odds with dominant traditional imagery. The peace sign, for instance, symbolises universal peace and equality but is also frequently appropriatedby profit-driven companies. By partially unravelling the threads in her work, Tezuka uncovers the multiple layers and interests at play across times and cultures, creating a new composition.

Flash from the Past wants to dig into the history of textiles highlighting how since the very beginning of times, textiles and natural fibers have been of prime importance in society — from survival to personal expression of feelings and ideas.

Chapter 3 — No Wool, No Vikings

History is full of miraculous journeys accomplished thanks to sails made of wool, and the boats bobbing beneath them. Over the past 50,000 years, we have used them to reach even the most isolated islands scattered like lost beads over the world’s surface.

Women have always played a predominant role in spinning, weaving, and finishing so their creations were crucial to the Vikings' success.

They are closely connected with us as human beings and our surroundings.

But what’s the connection between Text and Textiles?

Perpetual is the love for all that is short-lived, transient. Lucia Chain translates it into her collection. The Italian-Argentine brand based in Piedmont, committed to the environment, a collection of natural, reused, embroidered fabrics using zero-waste techniques. The pieces are exclusive, unique and numbered. No-gender, No-age and No-size, redesigned from the memory of Lucia Chain, who abstracts and transfigures memories, captures traces. “The only thing that is perpetual is our love for the ephemeral” underlines the collection made with fabrics saved from their destruction.

On March 22 the EU published the Green Washing Claims Directive. According to the directive, companies will need to back up their eco claims or they will face penalties.

As good as this sounds, this means that the singular Member States will have to find ways to regularly control green claims, publicly disclose their findings, and fine companies that do not comply.

We also need to keep in mind this is only a proposal and we are yet to see what the law will look like.

Do you think this is the first step to a more controlled eco-marketing era or is it still not enough?
