A little more on the moval.

A moval sits somewhere between an oval and a marquise, combining the softer curves of an oval with a more elongated, tapered silhouette.

With elongated diamond shapes, one of the biggest things I pay attention to is what’s happening through the centre of the stone.

Ovals, marquises, pears and movals can naturally show some degree of darker contrast through the middle, often referred to as a bow-tie. A little contrast isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it can give a diamond dimension and character.

What I don’t want is a dark, dominant area that stays dark as the diamond moves and takes away from the brightness of the rest of the stone.

This is also why two movals with beautiful specs on paper can look completely different side by side. Their proportions and facet patterns affect how light and contrast move throughout the diamond, something a carat, colour and clarity grade alone can’t show you.

For fancy shapes especially, I always want to see the stone in motion. The numbers narrow down the search. Your eyes make the final decision.
