Initiative Oversize Gold Chronograph

Registered in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1903 by C. Meyer-Graber, Initiative belongs to a fascinating chapter of Swiss horological history. Early examples included complicated gold pocket watches, while the trademark was later acquired by Montre Dolmy SA in 1943. This exceptional 1937 chronograph represents the earlier period of the brand, combining traditional craftsmanship with remarkably sophisticated design.

Its extraordinary white enamel dial features an intricate blue spiral tachymeter, red telemeter scale and beautifully recessed subsidiary registers. The delicate flame-blued steel hands provide a striking contrast against the porcelain-like surface, while the substantial 39 mm hinged case in solid 18k yellow gold offers exceptional presence for a pre-war wristwatch.

Completed by a bespoke, handcrafted honey-coloured alligator strap, this Initiative represents an intriguing combination of historical significance, technical complexity and understated elegance.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona "Zenith"

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16520 marked a turning point in the history of the Daytona. Introduced in 1988, it brought an automatic chronograph to a collection long associated with manually wound movements. It was the beginning of a new era, while retaining the proportions and detailing that make the five-digit generation so distinctive.

Inside beats calibre 4030, developed by Rolex from Zenith’s legendary El Primero. Reworked to meet Rolex’s technical standards, it operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour rather than the original 36,000. The 16520 is the only automatic Daytona generation powered by a Zenith-derived calibre, preceding the in-house calibre 4130 introduced with the ref. 116520. This technical transition remains one of the defining reasons for its lasting collector appeal.

This T-serial example was sold in 1997 and features the sought-after white dial, presented as a full set. The contrast between the white dial and black subsidiary registers gives the watch a crisp, instrument-like appearance. More than simply an earlier Daytona, the 16520 represents a defining chapter in Rolex chronograph history, combining Zenith heritage with Rolex engineering and the unmistakable character of the five-digit generation.

Longines Wittnauer V71 Chronograph

There are vintage chronographs that immediately announce themselves, and then there are watches like this Wittnauer, which reveal their importance to those who know what they are looking at. Dating to 1949, this exceptional example combines a beautifully proportioned 39 mm steel snap-back case, an outstanding original white radium dial, elegant blued syringe hands and an unmistakable late-1940s character. Founded in New York by Swiss-born Albert Wittnauer, the company became an important bridge between Swiss watchmaking and the American market, developing a particularly close relationship with Longines that would become a defining part of its history.

The connection is especially significant in the context of this watch. Wittnauer played an important role in distributing Longines watches in the United States, helping the Swiss manufacture establish its presence in the American market. In 1950, just one year after this chronograph was produced, Longines acquired the Wittnauer company. Inside this example is the hand-wound Valjoux 71, an early column-wheel chronograph calibre belonging to the technical generation that preceded the legendary Valjoux 72. Its generous 39 mm proportions, white radium dial and blued syringe hands capture the purposeful design language of the period.

The package is equally compelling: original box and original hang tag, remarkably preserved after almost eight decades. Fitted with an ostrich leather strap, this Wittnauer combines an important chapter in the Longines story with a serious early Valjoux movement and unusually desirable period accessories.

LeCoultre fancy classic

Some watches were conceived to tell the time. Others were designed to rethink the way we interact with it.

This exceptional LeCoultre Ref. 1287 combines sculptural Spider Lugs in 14k gold with one of the most ingenious complications of the post-war era: a power reserve indicator powered by the automatic bumper Calibre 481. Introduced in 1948, this mechanism displays the remaining running time up to approximately 40 hours, with a white sector indicating a healthy reserve and red warning that the energy is running low. An extraordinary degree of mechanical practicality for a wristwatch conceived more than seven decades ago.

The gilt dial, distinctive case architecture and cognac Louisiana alligator strap create a wonderfully balanced composition, completed by the original buckle. An American-market LeCoultre with genuine horological substance and a design that still feels strikingly modern today.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Gran Taille Two-tone

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the rare designs in watchmaking whose identity has remained unmistakable across generations. Introduced in the 1930s, its reversible case was conceived as a practical solution for polo players, eventually becoming an enduring symbol of Art Deco watch design.

This 1996 Reverso Grande Taille, reference 270.5.62, combines a steel outer case with a yellow gold inner case. The silver dial, Arabic numerals and blued steel hands maintain the model’s clean architectural character, while the hand-wound calibre 822 brings traditional mechanical watchmaking to its rectangular proportions.

Presented as a full set and fitted with its original Jaeger-LeCoultre ostrich strap, this two-tone example captures the understated elegance of the Grande Taille: distinctive, versatile and unmistakably Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Vetta Spillmann Gilt Chronograph

The early 1940s marked an important chapter in the evolution of the Swiss chronograph, when mechanical sophistication met a distinctive and purposeful design language. This Vetta from 1940, powered by the celebrated Valjoux 22 calibre, captures that period with an understated yet highly characterful configuration.

Its steel case, manufactured by Spillmann, frames a classic two-register layout, complemented by a black glossy gilt dial whose reflective surface gives the watch remarkable visual depth. The contrast between the deep black finish and the warm gilt details lends this example a presence that is both technical and elegant. With its serial number in the 25xx range, it offers an evocative glimpse into Vetta's early chronograph production.

A compelling combination of period design, mechanical pedigree and the enduring appeal of early Swiss chronographs.

Vetta gilt chronograph

There is a particular category of vintage chronograph that becomes increasingly interesting the deeper you go into the period: watches where the name on the dial is only one part of the story, and the movement, case construction and historical context carry equal weight.

This Vetta from 1939 is a strong example. Vetta was one of the important Italian names associated with sophisticated Swiss-made watches, and its early chronographs are particularly relevant to the history of Italian watch collecting. Here, the combination of a gilt dial, 36 mm case and Forte Pressione construction gives the watch an unmistakably early character.

Inside is the Valjoux 23, one of the great manual-winding column-wheel chronographs of the 1930s and 1940s. A calibre with genuine horological importance, and one that places this Vetta firmly within the serious pre-war chronograph tradition.

Vetta Spillmann Gilt Chronograph

The 1940s produced some of the most compelling mechanical chronographs, combining serious timing capabilities with an elegance that remains difficult to replicate. This Vetta is powered by the Valjoux 71, a manual-winding three-register caliber, housed in a 37.5 mm stainless steel case manufactured by Spillmann. Its inverted pump pushers give the case a distinctive profile, characteristic of the experimental spirit of early chronograph design.

The gilt dial is the real highlight. Arabic numerals and gold-toned graphics contrast with the glossy black surface, recalling traditional dial-making techniques in which metallic details were preserved through a negative-resist process before the surrounding areas were darkened. Rather than simply applying gold-colored printing, this approach allowed the underlying metal to contribute to the final appearance. The result is a dial with depth, warmth and a sophisticated interplay of light.

Vetta belongs to the wider story of Swiss watchmaking and Italian horological culture, when mechanical chronographs served as precision instruments for sport, motoring and many other applications. Completed with a black matte Louisiana alligator leather strap, this example captures the technical substance and understated elegance that make 1940s chronographs so rewarding to collect.

Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner ref. 14060 marked a defining transition in the history of the no-date Submariner. Introduced in 1990, it replaced the long-running ref. 5513 with the calibre 3000, while preserving the essential design that made the Submariner an icon: a perfectly balanced dial, a clean bezel layout and the unmistakable proportions of a professional Rolex sports watch.

This example dates to 1991, with serial number E48###x, placing it among the early production watches of the reference. Its appeal lies in its essential configuration, free from a date window and cyclops lens, and in the continuity it represents between vintage Submariners and the more modern generations. Accompanied by its Rolex guarantee, guarantee holder and original pouch, it offers a particularly interesting proposition for collectors drawn to early 14060 examples with period accessories.
