Don’t cut corners when it comes to diamond cut! Here are some fun facts about diamond cut grades you might not know:

- Cut grades are based on seven factors: brightness, fire, scintillation, weight ratio, durability, polish and symmetry.
- Only round brilliant diamonds receive cut grades. All other shapes receive polish and symmetry evaluations.
- Cut might just be the most important of the 4Cs! An Excellent cut makes a diamond bright and lively. A Poor cut leaves it dull and lifeless.
- Thanks to GIA’s introduction of diamond cut grades, most diamonds on the market today have an Excellent or Very Good cut.

This double-star ruby packs double the star power 🎆 This ruby was recently submitted to the GIA laboratory in Bangkok, where it caught the attention of one of our staff. Double-star corundum is, after all, one of the rarest and most prized varieties of corundum!

This fascinating ruby exhibits two intersecting white stars that dance across the surface of the gem, evoking fireworks. The stars are caused by inclusions of needle-like minerals such as rutile or hematite-ilmenite arranged in two different orientations near the curved dome of the cabochon.

No wonder it had our team starry-eyed!

Rubies have been highly sought after for centuries. Early, fine ruby sources include Mogok, Myanmar (formerly Burma) and Thailand. However, it’s important to choose a gem that ‘speaks’ to you!

Save this guide to July’s birthstone to help you choose the ruby that best suits your taste:
COLOR: As with most gemstones, color can vary. For example, ruby colors range from pure red to purplish red or orangy red. Some rubies exhibit red fluorescence, making their red color brighter when excited by the ultraviolet in sunlight.
CLARITY: Due to the rarity of better quality rubies, they are often heated or otherwise treated to enhance their appearance. Ask your jeweler for more details or request a laboratory report from GIA or another reputable gem testing laboratory.
CUTTING STYLE: Generally, the most valuable rubies are faceted. Rubies with more inclusions are often shaped into cabochons. Some cabochons can display asterism (a star-like pattern), which adds both beauty and value.
CARAT WEIGHT: Lower-quality rubies can be found in large sizes. Ruby-in-zoisite is a translucent to opaque form composed of ruby in green zoisite. It can occur in large sizes and is frequently used in carvings and ornamental pieces.
