The accommodation
Most of the furniture in the rooms is inventive and imaginative. These objects are the result of a creative reuse by "ComunaMano", they were things destined to landfills which have been given new form and life. Casa Verde takes care of the local communities and habitat by cooperating with farmers, artisans and local artists to ensure its guests genuine food and a unique experience. Fervent ecologists, we do everything we can to recycle and reuse the materials that pass through here and La Casa Verde is one of the few places that can boast an apartment worm composting system in which all food waste turns into fertile soil! Casa Verde is a urban permaculture project. Only flaw: it is in a very lively area and there are often parties in the evening and therefore a bit of noise. In addition to the room with private bathroom, there guests can access the kitchen-living room, a balcony on the square and a the roof terrace. Our home is managed by Constanza (mom and singer) and Nadia (Film maker and mother tongue English teacher). According to our commitments, we like finding the time to get to know travellers and exchange stories of life and adventures, or have a drink and sharing anecdotes about the area. The area
Looking out on the Ursino Castle, the house is located in the heart of the old city. The neaby area of San Cristoforo was created after the earthquake of 1693, as an expansion of the city to the south. "Here, favored by low land prices, the poorest survivors resettle their modest homes on the pre-existing road network made of narrow, winding, irregular roads. " The neighborhood is a place full of stimuli and dense of contradictions. On the one hand it is still a very deprived area; on the other, it offers a colorful fresco of the soul of the city of Catania: "Street Food", Sangeli, horse meat, are just some of the pearls that can be discovered in the streets of this neighborhood. The Pescheria (Piscarìa in Sicilian language) is the old fish market of Catania, where you can find fresh fish and vegetables in a noisy and authentic sicilian environment. How to move about
Centrally located, the house allows a car-less life to those who want to stay in the old city center. Walking along via S.Calogero, 5-minutes away, one can reach Piazza Borsellino (known as Piazza Alcalà) terminal for buses to the airport, the station, Aci Castello, the Playa, but also to other Sicilian cities such as Syracuse. Other things to keep in mind
Composting is compulsory. Bottled water will not be available as we are against the use of plastic. At La Casa Verde we drink tap water and, if you are lucky, water from the best sources of Etna (naturally sparkling and saline). Soaps are home made. On request you can buy organic and natural products (vegetables, preserves, cosmetics).
