A Prayer for the Water

Water.

Even before out first breath, we spend months swimming in the waters of our mother. The flow of water nourishes every living thing on our planet - no blue, no green. Water heals, just like the vast night sky or big expanses of wilderness. Water inspires us to surf, to dive, to explore. Water invites us to play. When water engulfs us, it brings with it a subtle reminder, a reminder that we too, are water. We are a part of the whole. A drop in a river, flowing towards the ocean. A drop in the sky, falling from a cloud. A drop in a lake, relishing in the stillness.

We love water. We love the colorful coral reefs that populate the shores of our oceans, we love food grown on fertile earth with clean water, we love the force of waterfalls and the taste of spring water. We love to dance, naked in the rain. It is this love that inspires us, it is this love that drives us, it is this love that beats at the heart of our story.

We have been blessed to travel to many corners of our planet. We have swam in frozen Scandinavian lakes, drank the healing waters flowing from Mount Shasta, explored the depths of our biggest oceans (and many of our seas), bathed on the shores of India’s holiest rivers, and played with sea creatures on dozens of islands. Our exploration has been extremely fulfilling, and also alarming.

We have seen the complete devastation of entire ecosystems first-hand. Once vibrant reefs bleached white before perishing completely along with the hundreds of species they support. Soil that has eroded to the point of decertifying mind-bogglingly large areas of land. Rivers throughout the Amazon rainforest that are so polluted that they no longer support healthy fish. Coastal birds whose bellies cannot digest the large amounts of micro plastics that have crept into their diet. Our journey has opened our eyes to the impact of our industrial activities, and it has brought us to tears more often than we care to count. It’s our tears, our water, that we call on to tell this story.

The fashion industry is the second largest pollutant of the planet. Old textiles end up in landfills, clothes made of polyester release micro plastics into the oceans which destroy marine ecosystems. Industrial dyeing processes waste and pollute an exorbitant amount of water. The clothes we wear no longer shape just how we look, they are decisions that impact the world we live in. Today we vote with our money, if we buy products that are made at the expense of wild habitats, whose production pollute our air, earth and water, or products that exploit disempowered populations, then that’s the world we vote for.

We created Ezgi because we feel it is time we make changes to how we treat our planet, all of the living things in it, and ourselves. We start by using fabric that would normally end up in a landfill. By repurposing old garments we cut down on the environmental toll of producing and dyeing new fabric and we breathe new life into old pieces, helping care for our beautiful planet. We work with locally sourced cotton, using natural dying techniques that do not pollute our water and that minimize its use. We don’t waste anything, every tiny scrap of material is used to make something magical.

Healing our waters goes beyond the environment, it’s also woven into our social fabric. A portion of every sale we make goes directly towards supporting women who have been the victims of sexual abuse. We need healthy, loving mothers if we want to safeguard the future of the next generation of water keepers.
