Vijayadashami ,celebrating the victory of good over evil, falling on the tenth day of the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin or Kartik, after the nine-day Navratri festival. It marks Lord Rama's triumph over the demon king Ravana and, in some regions, the goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura.
THE STORY BEHIND BUYING GOLD ON DUSSEHRA
Kautsa was a young Brahmin boy, the son of Devdatt. He was deeply devoted to his Guru, Varantu, who taught him the 14 sciences.
After completing his education, Kautsa offered a Guru Dakshina to his Guru Varantu but Varantu refused to accept anything.
Kautsa insisted on giving a meaningful Guru Dakshina. To avoid accepting anything, Guru Varantu asked for a huge amount: 140 million gold coins in exchange for the 14 sciences he had taught.
Kautsa felt worried because he didn’t have such a huge amount.
So, he decided to get help from King Raghu, a kind-hearted ruler known for his generosity towards Brahmins. He approached the king and shared his wish for the gold coins.
However, King Raghu had just completed a grand Yaga, where he had given away all his riches to those in need.
But King Raghu wanted to help Kautsa.
He thought for a moment and then went to the God Indra for help. Indra went to Kubera, the God of wealth, and requested him to shower King Raghu’s kingdom with gold coins, equal to the number of leaves on all the Aapti trees.
Kubera rained down gold coins on King Raghu's kingdom for each leaf of the Aapti tree. Kautsa happily collected all the coins and gave them to his Guru, Varantu.
This magical rain of gold coins happened on Dussehra. That's why people believe Dusshera is one of the auspicious days for purchasing gold.
From that day on, the tradition of exchanging Aapti leaves during Dussehra began, symbolizing the blessings of wealth and prosperity.
