Every meaningful collection has an origin story.

Ours began with listening.

Listening to the stories of Chettinad. Listening to the meaning hidden behind everyday words. Listening until one word stood apart - Vilasam.

Because in Chettinad, a Vilasam does not identify a house.

It identifies a family.

It speaks of lineage before location. Of belonging before geography. Of generations connected by memory, tradition and shared identity.

That is why this collection carries its name.

Not because it sounded beautiful.

But because it already carried centuries of meaning.

Some names are chosen.

Others are discovered.

Jewellery often survives longer than the people who wear it.

So do names.

In Chettinad, a Vilasam is not simply an address, it is a family’s identity, carried across generations like an heirloom. It preserves ancestry, belonging and memory in a way no document ever could.

That philosophy became the foundation of this collection.

Before a single piece was designed, we asked ourselves a simple question:

What if jewellery could preserve identity as beautifully as it preserves craftsmanship?

The answer became Vilasam.

Not merely a collection inspired by Chettinad, but one shaped by the values that have defined it for centuries.

Long before the world became connected through technology, Chettinad was already connected through people.

Merchants crossed oceans. Ideas crossed borders. Craftsmanship crossed generations.

The result wasn’t simply cultural exchange, it was the creation of an identity that felt global in experience, yet unmistakably local in expression.

This is one of the stories behind Chettinad.

Before history was written in books, it was carried in names.

In Chettinad, every Ammai and Appan speaks of faith. Every Thangam, Muthu, or Maragatham speaks of a community shaped by commerce, craftsmanship, and culture.

A name is never just a name. It is history spoken aloud.

Some inherit heirlooms.
Some inherit stories.

In Chettinad, even a name carries memory.

Names such as Alagammai, Thenammai, Ulagammai reflected faith. Names like Thangam, Sornam, Vairam, Muthu, Pavalam, and Maragatham reflected a community shaped by trade, prosperity, and craftsmanship. Together, they reveal how culture quietly preserves its own history.

Pettagam is our way of opening these archives, one story, one symbol, one tradition at a time.

Chettinad jewellery did not emerge in isolation.

It grew alongside palatial homes, intricate Athangudi tiles, carved Burmese teak, global trade routes, and generations of skilled craftsmen. Every ornament carries traces of the world that shaped it.

Pettagam is an invitation to understand that world, to see jewellery not as an object, but as the natural continuation of a culture where architecture, design, craftsmanship and identity evolved together.

12/07/2026

Preservation is more than safeguarding an object.

It is safeguarding the stories, techniques and traditions that give the object its meaning.

Pettagam exists because every generation deserves to inherit not only the jewellery of the past, but also the knowledge that shaped it.

The language of Chettinad was never expressed through architecture alone.

The same motifs that adorned its homes found their way into its jewellery, carrying a shared visual identity across spaces, objects and generations. Every curve, floral form and geometric pattern reflected a culture where design was interconnected, not isolated.

Pettagam preserves these connections, reminding us that heritage is often found in the details we overlook.
