ליקוי ירח מלא - סימן טוב או חלילה, פחות?

הערב, ליל י״ד באלול, יחול ליקוי ירח מלא. בתופעת הטבע הנדירה הזו, ייראה הירח כשהוא כולו בצבע אדום. במקורות רבים מתפרשת התופעה כסימן לא טוב לישראל: “בזמן שהחמה לוקה, סימן רע לאומות העולם, אבל בזמן שהלבנה לוקה, סימן רע לשונאיהם (- ביטוי הפוך) של ישראל, מפני שישראל מונים (סופרים את החודשים) ללבנה” (לפי הירח). אבל לפי המהר”ל, עצם העובדה שליקוי כזה מופיע כמהלך טבעי שניתן לצפותו מראש, מעיד על כך שבכל ברייה יש משהו בלתי שלם, כולנו לוקים בדבר זה או אחר, אז מה נעשה - נביט בליקוי הזה ונתמלא בפחד? לא! נעשה את הדבר שלשמו נבראנו: נתקן! הערב, בזמן ליקוי הלבנה, נבקש להיות אנשים מקבלי אור, לא אנשים שמסתירים אותו. נבקש רחמים על העולם שתחת השמש, נבקש לשקף לכל אדם את אורו העצמי, נבקש סוף לשפיכות הדמים ובעיקר: נתחנן שסוף סוף יגיע אור השמש לחטופינו יושבי החושך. השמש והירח והכוכבים, הם לא אלה שמכריעים את גורל העם הזה, וכמו שנקרא בהפטרת השבת הקרובה: ק֥וּמִי א֖וֹרִי כִּ֣י בָ֣א אוֹרֵ֑ךְ וּכְב֥וֹד יְהוָ֖ה עָלַ֥יִךְ זָרָֽח׃
כִּֽי־הִנֵּ֤ה הַחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ יְכַסֶּה־אֶ֔רֶץ וַעֲרָפֶ֖ל לְאֻמִּ֑ים וְעָלַ֙יִךְ֙ יִזְרַ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה וּכְבוֹד֖וֹ עָלַ֥יִךְ יֵרָאֶֽה׃ לֹא־יָב֥וֹא עוֹד֙ שִׁמְשֵׁ֔ךְ וִירֵחֵ֖ךְ לֹ֣א יֵאָסֵ֑ף כִּ֣י יְהוָ֗ה יִֽהְיֶה־לָּךְ֙ לְא֣וֹר עוֹלָ֔ם וְשָׁלְמ֖וּ יְמֵ֥י אֶבְלֵֽךְ׃
Total Lunar Eclipse - A Good Sign or, Heaven Forbid, Otherwise?
Tonight, on the 14th of Elul, a total lunar eclipse will occur. During this rare natural phenomenon, the moon will appear completely red in color. Many sources interpret this phenomenon as an unfavorable sign for Israel: "When the sun is eclipsed, it is a bad omen for the nations of the world, but when the moon is eclipsed, it is a bad omen for the enemies of Israel, because Israel counts (calculates the months) by the moon" (according to the lunar calendar).
But according to the Maharal, the very fact that such an eclipse appears as a natural process that can be predicted in advance indicates that in every created being there is something incomplete - we all suffer from this flaw or another. So what shall we do - gaze at this eclipse and be filled with fear? No! We shall do what we were created for: we shall repair!
Tonight, during the lunar eclipse, let us ask to be people who receive light, not people who hide it. Let us ask for mercy upon the world under the sun, let us ask to reflect each person's inner light back to them, let us ask for an end to bloodshed, and above all: let us plead that finally the light of the sun will reach our captives who sit in darkness.
The sun and moon and stars are not what determine the fate of this people, and as we read in the upcoming Shabbat's Haftarah: "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but upon you the Lord will arise, and His glory will be seen upon you... Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended."
