Lifetime achievement award for Ryans Jewellers of Roches Street

CONGRATULATIONS are in order for Mr Stephen Ryan and his wife Rita, long-standing jewellers at 44 Roches Street, along with daughter Fionagh. At the annual Brides of Limerick Wedding Industry Awards organised by Drew Media, Stephen and Rita were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award 2017.

Votes from Brides of Limerick's readership and customers had chosen Ryans Jewellers as the best candidates in the Mid-West for this exceptional award, presented at their gala night in Bunratty Castle Hotel on 22nd October last.

"I was completely taken aback," Stephen Ryan tells Limerick Post. "Rita and I opened Ryans Jewellers here at Roches Street in 1964 and we are looking into our 54th Christmas here. This was the first shop opened by Irwin Brothers jewellers in Limerick and we bought it off Pat Irwin. So, this has been a jewellers' shop continuously since 1876, that's 141 years".

More than a lifetime. And now Stephen and Fionagh run the business over two floors – with downstairs showcasing a private bridal suite for everything from engagement & wedding ring fittings, diamond jewellery, to bridal headpieces. Specialist territory.

What qualities does it take to become a good jeweller? He doesn't hesitate:

"Service to your customers. Serve them well and they will come back. Good staff who are likeminded to you, and having interesting stock makes people return for their special occasions and look for your advice."

Stephen looks back on a lifetime in the exciting business of watches, gemstones, the buying and selling of beautiful pieces of jewellery for men and women.

"In the early years I was more adventurous. I was the youngest jeweller in Limerick and used to travel to all the European fairs and buy interesting pieces. I like artistic people and it's important to have different pieces of jewellery to offer to customers [than other retailers]. That contributed to our success down throughout the years".
