Most of the work I do here at the studio is about family… but not all 😅 There was that time when I was asked to make a mould of an actor for a very specific part. The play was The Lieutenant of Inismore by Martin Mc Donagh, very dark and very funny! One of the characters gets shot in the second half and the body remains on stage for the whole second half…. Queue West Cork Casting Studio 🙌

Myself and my buddy .art went down to Rossmore one Sunday to make the mould with a very obliging actor. It was certainly an acting lesson for all of us… the mould took slightly longer to go off than it said on the tin and there was an element of minor panic with myself and Kay… not that you would have known it… we looked calm and collected on the surface 😅🙈

Weeks later we were invited to go and see it, it’s an excellent play! And the bust we created played an Oscar winning role because towards the end of the play I overheard someone behind me whisper to her companion “that actor has been on stage an awful long time” ⭐️

Just over 10 years ago I was on a career break from my 9-5 adult guidance job. Since taking the break we moved to west Cork and had a second baby…. The prospect of going to back to the office was not attractive to me and then….😅

Then I saw a Facebook post showing a family of four (just like mine) having their hands cast together. A that was it, I had to know how to do it and so spent the next year or so practicing at home. One of my first pieces was my own family ✨

The girls were maybe 3 and 6 and I loved the idea of them growing up and looking at their little hands 👋🏻 and now we have one (hopefully) heading off to college in September all growed up! I’m so glad I was able to capture them when they were so small 🥰

Maybe your family is getting older, thinking about college and jobs, thinking about branching off and leaving the family home 🏠 A family circle lifecast is a wonderful show of togetherness and the strength of family unity. A creative way of keeping the whole family together forever 🤗

By the way!! I had initially mounted our family cast on a round board, bad move… it rolled onto the floor and smashed to pieces 😩 luckily I was able to put it back together, tidy up the cracks and remould and cast a new piece! See today’s stories for some of that 🙌

Personal, poignant and private ✨

Everything I do here at West Cork Casting Studio is about family, connection and memories. Nothing is more precious than the memorial jewellery I make incorporating a tiny amount of ashes from a loved one.✨

Usually I will have had a chat to the person commissioning the piece not only to find out exactly what kind of piece they would like to honour their loved one but also to find out a little about the person who has passed away… including what kind of music they liked. ✨

Before I start making the piece I light my candle and hold the ashes for a moment. I say a little hello to the person who has passed away, tell them what I’m making and who it’s for and ask them to help me make something beautiful. While I’m making I play some of the music they loved in the background. ✨

These are very special pieces and I like to make a little ritual of the process to honour the deceased and it also reminds me of how precious life is and how quickly life can pass us by. ✨

I can’t believe it’s almost 10 years since I made this of my two girls… from memory there was plenty of “stop moving”, “I’m not moving, you’re moving” type of banter going on between them while I was making the mould 😆😅 but after all that I have this gorgeous piece to treasure forever 😍 preserve a moment for your own family… pm for more details and booking 💖

Last Marina Market dates for 2025 🙌 Baby, doggo casting on the 15 and 16th of November. Moulds made this weekend will be ready in time to go under the tree! All casting required for Christmas must have the moulds made by the end of November at the latest. Jewellery orders must be in by this date also… postage gets really slow coming up to Christmas so I want to have jewellery made and back in the post by mid December!! However!! I will be at the on the 12/13/14th December and also 19/29/21 so if you can come and collect jewellery there I can take orders the week before. I’m sure all of that is clear as mud 🤪 get in touch with any queries or questions 🤗
