Hungarian Sabres Through History – 15 Examples Featuring VB Swordshop products, in less than 10 Minutes

How did Hungarian sabres evolve over the centuries? In this video, we take you through the development of Hungarian sabres using 15 examples made by VB Swordshop all in less than 10 minutes.

The pieces featured in the video are based on original archaeological finds and period depictions, and have been optimized for reenactment fights and HEMA fencing. Every blade is made in our own workshop with great care, using carbon steel and proper heat treatment, so that each sabre is not only historically authentic, but also a genuinely functional fencing weapon.

Katzbalgers are distinctive short swords closely associated with the German Landsknechts of the 16th century. They are especially recognizable by their broad blades and characteristic S-shaped or figure-eight guards, giving them a bold and unmistakable appearance.
These weapons were also carried by Landsknechts who fought at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, exactly 500 years ago.

We forge katzbalgers as well and have made several different versions over the years, including custom interpretations. You can also find one of our regular katzbalger model available in the webshop.
