Tomorrow marks the official opening of the “Precious Coral, from Curiosity to Treasures” exhibition. On the eve of this special occasion, L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts warmly invites you to explore the rich history of precious coral.

In 1st-century China, during the Eastern Han dynasty, the dictionary 𝑆ℎ𝑢𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑛 𝐽𝑖𝑒𝑧𝑖 listed the word for coral under the jade radical and described it as living in the sea or the mountains. The idea that corals are animals did not emerge until the 18th century. Today, it is a well-established scientific fact that all coral species belong to the animal kingdom, specifically within the phylum Cnidaria.

A highly prized species of precious coral, it is also known as Aka coral, which can be found in deep-sea environments at depths of 80 to 300 meters near Japan and the Ogasawara Islands. Its delicate, fan-shaped formations and richly saturated hues have long made it one of the most coveted corals in the history of adornment and collecting.
