Tanzania just passed a new law that
bans foreigners from running certain small businesses.

Starting July 28, 2025, non-citizens are no longer allowed to open or renew businesses in 15 specific areas - including:

* Salons and barbershops
* Small retail shops
* Restaurants
* Mobile money booths
* Tour guiding
* Electronics and phone repair
* Crop buying directly from farms
* Cleaning services, and more
This move is meant to protect local jobs and make sure small business opportunities go to Tanzanian citizens.
Foreigners who already own businesses in these areas can only operate until their license expires - they won’t be allowed to renew.
Breaking the rules could lead to huge fines (over $3,800), jail time, or even deportation. And even Tanzanian citizens who help foreigners get around the law could also face legal trouble.
