🎍Nontronite 🎍 is an iron-rich clay mineral in the smectite group that typically has a pale green, yellow, or brownish colour.

It forms from the weathering of iron-rich rocks like basalt or biotite or in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, and is found in locations around the world, including France, where it was first discovered in Nontron, Dordogne, in 1827, and was named after the town. Our high-quality specimens were mined in Jove Lauriano Claim, Linopolis, Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its structure resembles a phyllosilicate clay, meaning it has layers that can absorb and hold water, causing swelling. It has a very low hardness on the Mohs scale, causing it to be brittle, and it can crack as it dries if it absorbs water.

Did you know mammoths go through SIX sets of teeth? 🦷 We’re lucky enough to have just gotten our hands on this incredible whole specimen! 🦣 This showstopping specimen clearly displays both the root and crown of this massive molar, with incredible preservation. 🏔️ The mammoth species is likely to be ‘Mammuthus rumanus’, which lived in Hungary, and is the first mammoth found outside of Africa! 🌎

What a difference a year makes! It was almost exactly 365 days ago when the warehouse was bare and all it was filled with was possibility. Looking back now, it was such an exciting time for all of us here at Dolphin Minerals, especially when you rose-tint how much work, planning and effort it really took supersizing our store and moving everything over! And it’s been such a delight making it our own and filling it with thousands of gorgeous crystals of all shapes and sizes. We hope you’ve had time to visit our new warehouse!
