A ring listed on Amazon as 925 sterling silver - meaning it should be 92.5% silver — was tested by an independent laboratory and found to be 92.3% cadmium.

Not silver. Cadmium. One of the most toxic heavy metals on Earth.

The Birmingham Assay Office conducted the testing as part of a Sunday Times investigation into cheap jewelry sold on major online marketplaces. The cadmium concentration in the ring was more than 9,000 times the legal limit in the UK and European Union. Charms purchased from a TikTok Shop seller contained 33% cadmium - nearly 3,300 times the permitted threshold.

Cadmium is a carcinogen. It accumulates in the body over time and causes severe long-term damage to the kidneys, bones, and respiratory system. It doesn't pass through - it builds up. Brief contact with intact skin is unlikely to cause acute poisoning, but wearing it daily, exposure through pierced ears or broken skin, or a child chewing on it represents a serious health risk.

Both platforms removed the flagged listings after the investigation. They were up long enough to sell to an unknown number of customers.

This is the core problem with third-party marketplace sellers - a brand can list anything under any label, and the platform has no practical mechanism to verify what the product actually contains before it ships to your home.

The rule of thumb from regulators: if it's unusually cheap, the label is vague, and the manufacturer is obscure, there is no safe assumption about what is inside it.
