Croxley Common Moor

Croxley Common Moor Croxley Common Moor is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. Over 250 different types of plants have been found on the Moor.

Without ongoing management, in time the open grassland of the Moor would be come completely overgrown, first by blackthorn and hawthorn bushes, then by trees, such as silver birch, willow and oak. If you walk around the Moor you can see that this is already happening. The Friends of Croxley Common Moor meet once a month, usually on the second Sunday, to clear encroaching blackthorn scrub and to re

move invasive ragwort and thistles. We also hold a number of public walks for bird watching, tree and wildflower identification etc. For the larger jobs, specialist conservation contractors are employed. In the Summer months, cattle graze the Moor, keeping the grass short and eating small seedling trees. This is an essential part of conservation.

One of the objectives for the Friends of Croxley Common Moor is to reduce the amount of scrub across the Moor. Over dominant bushes of Blackthorn and Hawthorn spread over the open grassland blocking sunlight and preventing the wild flowers and grasses from growing. An extra bonus of clearing the scrub is that new sight lines are opened up.
Below are the before and after pictures of the latest seasons cutting sessions. Before, is on the boundary of the 'model airplane flying area'. After, taken from virtually the same spot shows an opening created through the scrub to allow access to another open area of the Moor and a view across to the river.

On Wednesday 3rd December a joint operation between CountrySide Rights of Way, the Friends of Croxley Common Moor and a working party from Northwood HQ took place on an initially very misty site. The forecast showed that the mist would be burnt off and the sun would shine on the volunteers. And so it did.
Around 45 people were deployed across the 5 hour working window, spread far and wide over the current seasons targeted area. A great deal of scrub was cut and burnt, brambles too. At the end of the session this area of the Moor looked a little less overgrown and a new sight line had been established allowing views towards the river from the middle of the Moor.
The Friends meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month (10:00 to 13:00hrs) and will continue to open up this area thus returning it to open Moorland. If you see us on the Moor come over and have a chat, perhaps we could interest you in joining our team.

September marks the start of The Friends of Croxley Common Moors autumn/winter/spring task. This involves the removal of over dominant and unwanted shrubs and bushes (scrub).
This months session centred around clearing of a small sized thicket in preparation for a fire site to burn the debris from this and subsequent sessions.
The 'Friends' meet on the second Sunday of the month (3rd Sunday in November) at 10:00am. This season we'll be working on the right hand side of the main path about 150 metres in a south westerly direction from the main gate near the river.
Yesterday we were visited by the cows whilst we were working.
Feel free to pop over for a chat or maybe join us for a workout.

Both this weekend's events (Saturday walk and Sunday volunteer session) are now cancelled, in view of the UK Health Security Agency amber heat health alert for the South East for the whole weekend.
Apologies for any disappointment or inconvenience.

Sunday 13th October saw the 2nd of this seasons cutting sessions. The Friends of Croxley Common Moor are continuing to manage overgrown areas of the Moor in order to enhance the views and reduce over dominant shrubs to encourage a more diverse range of natural ground cover plants, and make the Moor a more pleasant place to walk. We were joined by the herd of Red Sussex cows that are currently residing on the Moor.

Today saw the completion of a new boardwalk on Croxley Common Moor.
Countryside & Rights of Way Service and their volunteers completed the task on two Wednesday sessions.
The finished boardwalk will enable users of the Moor to traverse a particularly damp area with ease.
Thank you to all involved.
