⛏️ MEET THE BAL MAIDENS OF CORNWALL ⚒️

When people think of Cornwall’s mining history, they often picture men working deep underground.

But what about the women who worked above ground and helped keep the mines running?

These women were known as Bal Maidens — from the Cornish words bal, meaning mine, and maiden, meaning young woman.

💪 Bal Maidens worked hard in Cornwall’s mines, often breaking, sorting and dressing the ore brought up from underground. Their work was physically demanding, repetitive and carried out in tough conditions.

They could spend long hours working with heavy tools, sorting through ore and separating the valuable tin from unwanted rock.

Their contribution was essential. Without the work carried out by Bal Maidens and other surface workers, the ore could not have been prepared for further processing.

👩‍🔧 They were an important part of Cornwall’s mining workforce.

Today, the Bal Maiden has become a powerful symbol of strength, resilience and the often-overlooked contribution of women to Cornwall’s industrial heritage.

So next time you see a photograph or painting of Cornwall’s old mines, remember that the story isn’t just about the men underground.

It’s also about the women above ground who helped make the industry work. ❤️

🎉 Come and see us at Fowey Hall Family Fun Day!* 🎉

We’re really looking forward to being part of the Fowey Hall Family Fun Day on Saturday 15th August, from 12pm–4pm! 💙

It’s going to be a lovely afternoon for all the family, with live music, a hog roast, children’s activities, local stalls and plenty of fun – and entry is completely FREE! 🎪✨

We’ll be there with lots of our handmade jewellery and gifts, all made using pure Cornish tin. ⚒️💍

We’re especially excited because we’ll also be bringing along some of our new designs, including pieces for adults and children. This is a great chance to come and have a browse, chat to us about how we make our jewellery and perhaps find something special to take home. ❤️

Summer is the perfect time to embrace colour, flowers and beautiful handmade pieces – and our flower-inspired jewellery has all three! ☀️🌺

Each piece is handmade from pure Cornish tin in our workshop, with many of the intricate flower designs being hand pierced. It’s a time-consuming process, but it allows us to create delicate details and makes each piece wonderfully unique.

For those who love a splash of colour, some of our flower designs are finished with beautiful natural stones, including warm carnelian, vibrant turquoise and rich purple amethyst. 🧡💙💜

So this is my excuse for being absent on social media this month... It's been a busy time....

I've been to the Isles of Scilly to see my daughter, to France for a few days with my Dad and up to Stratford-Upon-Avon for a friends 25th Wedding Anniversary party...

To finish off I've been painting my daughters bedroom before she comes home and I can now see why I didn't have a career as a painter decorator, I have more paint in my hair than on the walls!!!! 🤭😬

Alongside this I've been busy in the workshop making and working on the Christmas decoration!! Dawn has been amazing holding the fort with the shop and orders... so as you can imagine social media took a back seat...

As much as I love making jewellery and running a business sometimes friends and family have to come first!!!

Did you know that abalone stone isn't actually a stone at all?

The beautiful, iridescent material used in our Abalone Stone Pendant comes from the inner shell of the abalone mollusc – a type of sea snail found in coastal waters around the world. 🐚

The shell is lined with layers of nacre (also known as mother-of-pearl), which creates those stunning flashes of blue, green, purple and silver that seem to change as they catch the light.

Because it's a natural shell, no two pieces are ever exactly the same, making every pendant completely unique.

We love pairing this gift from the sea with pure Cornish tin from the historic South Crofty Mine, bringing together two natural materials that tell the story of Cornwall – one from the ocean and one from deep beneath the earth.

Another hot day in the workshop! ☀️🔥

I've been busy melting pure Cornish tin, getting it ready to transform into more handmade jewellery. Every sheet starts life as a tin ingot, which means we have to create our own metal before we can even begin making your pieces.

I won't lie... this isn't the easiest weather to be working with molten metal! 🥵 Between the melting pot, the rolling mill and the summer temperatures, it's certainly warm work. But seeing those finished pieces come together makes it all worthwhile.

There's something really satisfying about taking raw Cornish tin and shaping it by hand into jewellery that will be treasured for years to come.

Now... back to the heat! 🔨✨
