Here’s the first look at our Wimbledon project.
Currently at the concept stage of the design, this long, narrow garden spans multiple levels and felt a little disconnected.
The lower terrace has been expanded to provide a fully functioning entertainment space, complete with a cantilevered dining area, an outdoor kitchen, and planting to soften the space and create an intimate social area, seamlessly connecting with the living space inside.
On the upper level, vertical interest has been introduced with trees and an architectural pergola, drawing the eye from the lower terrace towards the back of the garden and inviting exploration.
Gentle new steps lead to the upper level, where the long expanse has been subtly dissected with three large planting beds. Along with the zigzag path, this encourages a slower journey through the space. The horizontal orientation of the stepping stones visually widens the garden.
The path eventually arrives at a second seating area at the back, offering a more intimate and relaxed retreat, surrounded by planting and the tranquil sounds of a water feature.
Materials are used to create subtle contrast and guide the eye through the garden. Dark clay pavers sit alongside light porcelain, breaking up the surface and adding texture. Along the boundaries, warm horizontal timber panelling, dark green hedging, and sections of black-painted fencing create rhythm and structure. The black fencing acts like a picture frame for the white birch. The hedge funnel views through the garden while keeping the eye within the space, with the trees drawing the gaze upwards.
