❤️✏️ Sometimes, the things that bring us peace are the things we've loved all along. 🐴
I came across something on Facebook today that stopped me in my tracks, because it felt as though someone had put into words something I understand completely.
As a little girl, I was good at two things. Art and horses.
And here I am, all these years later, still finding my way back to those same two things. ❤️
I work predominantly in graphite pencil, not because it's fashionable or because it's what everyone else is doing, but because it's what I was good at as a child. It's where my love of art began, and somehow, it's still where I feel most at home.
When I sit down with my pencils and a drawing, something changes. The noise of the world fades away. My mind settles. I become completely absorbed in the details — every hair, every shadow, every little expression that brings an animal to life.
For me, drawing is a kind of meditation. It brings me complete peace.
Having been through breast cancer twice, and living with the physical impact that has left behind, I've come to appreciate that feeling in a way I perhaps never did before.
Sometimes I wonder whether I should have picked up my pencils during treatment. Whether having that little escape might have helped me through some of those difficult days.
But the truth is, when you're in the middle of something like that, you're often just trying to get through it. You don't always know what you need, and you certainly don't always have the energy to find it.
Perhaps I wasn't ready then. Perhaps I needed to find my way back to it in my own time.
What I do know is that when I draw now, I feel completely at peace. It's not simply a distraction or a way to pass the time. It's a place where I can be myself, without the weight of everything else for a little while.
I'm not thinking about what my body can or can't do. I'm not worrying about tomorrow. I'm simply Carrie, with a pencil in my hand, doing something I've loved since I was a little girl.
And I think there's something incredibly special about that.
Perhaps we never really grow out of the things that make us happy. Perhaps they're still there, quietly waiting for us to find our way back to them when we need them most.
So when you see one of my graphite portraits, you're not just seeing a drawing. You're seeing a lifetime of loving horses, pets, wildlife, hours of patience and concentration, and something that brings me a sense of peace I can't quite put into words.
This has never been just art to me.
It's part of who I am. It's always been part of who I am.
And I'm grateful that, after everything life has thrown at me, I still have this.

Sometimes, finding yourself again begins with picking up the very thing you loved as a child.
