A stronger new setting for a much-loved engagement ring 💍✨

Amy contacted us about her beautiful 18ct white gold engagement ring after noticing the claws had become worn over time. They had started lifting and catching, and she wanted advice on the best way to make the ring more secure for everyday wear.

During our consultation, I discussed two options with Amy — rebuilding the existing claws or replacing the setting entirely with something more robust. As Amy works closely with horses, durability was especially important, so I suggested a rubover setting for added protection and longevity.

I sketched out the design so Amy could visualise how the finished ring would look and explained how the original setting would be carefully removed and replaced with a new low-profile setting. A rubover setting has a sleek, modern appearance and securely surrounds the diamond with a continuous band of precious metal, helping to protect it from knocks and wear.

In our workshop, Mark carefully unset the diamond and removed the original setting from the ring. We sourced the perfect size 18ct white gold rubover setting to fit Amy’s diamond exactly before polishing it to a high shine and soldering it into place as low as possible for a practical, comfortable finish.

Particular care was taken to position the galleries correctly to allow light to enter the back of the diamond and maximise its sparkle. The ring was then reshaped, polished and checked to ensure the finger size remained correct after the work was completed.

Marcelo expertly set the diamond into its new setting by carving a precise seat for the stone to rest securely within. He then carefully pressed the white gold around the diamond, creating the smooth rubover finish, before bright-cutting the inside edge for a crisp, refined look.

After a final polish, Amy’s engagement ring was ready to be reunited with its owner — now stronger, more practical and ready for many more years of everyday wear ✨

A beautiful family heirloom restored 💚✨

Amanda visited our design studio to discuss refurbishing a sentimental emerald ring she had inherited from her late mother. The ring meant so much to her, and she wanted it resized so it could sit perfectly alongside her mum’s original wedding band.

During the consultation, I carefully inspected the ring and suggested creating a brand new, thicker band using gold from the wedding band itself. This allowed us to combine both of her mother’s rings into one meaningful piece. I also noticed the claws holding the gemstones had worn very thin over time and would need rebuilding to properly secure the stones.

In our workshop, Mark carefully removed the old band from the emerald ring before melting it together with the wedding band. The gold was heated in a crucible, cleaned to remove impurities and poured into an ingot mould ready to be transformed into a new handmade band.

The gold then went through a process called annealing, where it is heated and cooled repeatedly to soften it, allowing it to be rolled and shaped into the perfect new band for the ring.

To protect the emeralds from heat damage, they were carefully removed before the new band was soldered into place. Emeralds are delicate gemstones, so this step is essential during restoration work.

Marcelo then rebuilt each claw using laser welding, layering fresh gold onto the worn settings to ensure the gemstones would be secure for many more years to come. Once complete, the emeralds were expertly re-set back into the ring.

The finished piece beautifully brought together two of Amanda’s mother’s rings into one restored family heirloom 💚 It was such a pleasure to welcome Amanda back to the studio to collect her refurbished ring — along with the remaining gold from the original pieces.

Moulding and Casting: A sentimental ring with a new chapter 💍✨

Ben first contacted us about recreating a very special family ring for his wife, Julia. The original yellow gold ring had belonged to Julia’s late father and held huge sentimental value for both Julia and her sister. Julia wanted a platinum version created for herself, while her sister would continue wearing the original ring.

They travelled to our Shaftesbury Design Studio to discuss the moulding and casting process in more detail. During the consultation, I explained how we could use the original ring to create an exact replica while preserving all the little details that made it so personal.

One of the most important things to Julia was keeping the ring’s original character. The scratches, dents and signs of wear were all part of its story, so we carefully ensured these details remained in the finished platinum version.

Mark created a custom rubber mould from the original ring before producing a wax replica for the casting process. Molten platinum was then cast into the mould to create an identical version of the ring, capturing every detail of the original design.

Once cast, the new platinum ring was lightly polished to retain its much-loved worn appearance. We also added a new laser engraving inside the band and the ring was hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office before collection.

Seeing the finished platinum ring alongside the original yellow gold piece was incredibly special — two rings connected by family history, memories and meaning 🤍

It was a pleasure to welcome Ben and Julia back to our Shaftesbury Design Studio to collect such a treasured piece.

Family Opal and Diamond Ring ✨💎

Avril had a yellow gold opal pendant she wanted to gift to her daughter-in-law. She visited our Shaftesbury Design Studio to discuss creating a bespoke family opal and diamond ring.

She also brought a yellow gold diamond ring and hoped to incorporate its stones into the new design, imagining a diamond on either side of the opal. I suggested creating CAD images first so her daughter-in-law, Laura, could see the design and have input before anything was made.

The first step was removing the opal from its pendant. Mark carefully cut into the gold filigree and gently opened the setting, releasing the opal without damage. The diamond setting from the ring had been soldered in place, but Avril wanted to keep the band for a future piece. Mark heated the setting until the solder released, allowing the diamond setting to be removed while preserving the band and central diamond.

He then separated all three diamonds, preparing the two outer stones and the opal for measuring and CAD design. The gold band and central diamond were returned to Avril.

Laura requested fine claws for the diamonds in an 18ct white gold ring. I recommended a rubover setting for the opal to protect the softer stone. She loved the CAD designs and approved the piece.

The ring was cast in one piece in 18ct white gold, then carefully filed and polished. The diamonds were claw set with four claws each and a gallery beneath to enhance light. The opal was rubover set, securing and protecting it beautifully.

After a final polish, the ring was ready. The whole family came to collect it, making it a truly special moment.

Avril said, “Thank you so much for making Laura’s ring, it’s beautiful and we are all delighted.”

Laura later added, “Thank you again for the work you’ve done on the ring. We’re so pleased with it!”

Re-polishing an Aquamarine from Husband to Wife ✨💙

Olivia booked a private design consultation with me to redesign a family ring and re-polish an aquamarine gifted by her husband. She’d been recommended by a previous client and wanted a new design that truly showcased the stone’s colour and cut.

It was important to reuse as much of the original ring as possible. I explained we could retain the 18ct white gold and reset both the diamonds and aquamarine. The ring had been well worn, and the aquamarine showed scratches and chips across its facets—small, precisely angled surfaces that reflect light. When damaged, they reduce the gemstone’s sparkle.

I showed Olivia how each facet could be re-cut and polished to restore its clean lines and brilliance. The first step was carefully unsetting the stones so the top facets—including the table and crown—could be re-polished.

Once removed, I measured each gemstone to create bespoke CAD designs based on Olivia’s vision. She wanted finer claws for the aquamarine, so I suggested elegant ‘dragon’s foot’ claws, shaped like teardrops to enhance the centre stone. The diamonds would feature round claws in a tapered trefoil shoulder design.

After reviewing the initial CAD, Olivia loved the top view but wanted more detail in the side profile. I suggested adding delicate scrollwork in the gallery (the space beneath the stones that allows light through), which added interest and refinement.

We created a wax model for casting, adding extra 18ct white gold to ensure proper flow during the process. Once cast, the ring was polished to a high shine, and the aquamarine was expertly re-polished. The stones were then set, with precise ‘dragon’s foot’ claws for the centre and round claws for the diamonds.

After a final polish and hallmarking at Birmingham Assay Office, the transformation was complete—the aquamarine’s sparkle fully restored.

It was a joy to welcome Olivia and her husband back to the studio to collect their beautifully redesigned ring.
