Hello everyone.
I would like to wish you all a belated Happy New Year for 2025. I also wish to apologise for being away for so long. The last four months of 2024 was an extremely busy and demanding time for my work and family.
It was also a milestone as I broke the 1000 mark for all the pieces of original jewellery and luxury items I have made since I started The Goldsmithy back in 2007
I would now like to show you a few more pictures of work I have made from I was last on Facebook and a few from the vaults that I hope you have not seen.
I would also like to say that I am now looking for two new students who would like to learn something of what being a goldsmith is like.
The lessons are either two- or four-hour duration.

Its been a time since I posted some new pieces that I have made for my wonderful customers. Every time I get a new piece to make it is that person who has used their imagination and memories to get the designs started for them.
That means that every piece is special to them, never to be knowingly copied so that each item of jewellery is original and unique to that person.

After the first few weeks of taking on students, I thought that it would be good to tell others all about it. These three students are nearing the end of their first projects and all three are succeeding in making their pieces of Jewellery.
Their pieces of work are all in Silver which will be hallmarked
They all tell me that they are enjoying the experience very much and are looking forward to finishing the pieces. I have asked them all if they mind me putting their photos on Facebook and they have all agreed to this. So, after a few lessons they are all going to be able to say they, that we made this and wear them with that knowledge.

I have not been on Facebook for a while due to being very busy making pieces for my customers. I now have a bit of time (not much) to add some new pieces that have been made recently. Some of them were Christmas presents, some engagement rings and some dress rings.
All of them are my customers own designs and where possible made from materials that have been recycled from old.
I have also just started teaching at my workshop and still have some spaces if anyone would like to try their hand.

Re-using your old jewellery.
Many people still ask me about if it is possible to use some of their own jewellery to make new pieces out of?
The answer is of course Yes. I actively encourage potential customers to do this.
Using your old jewellery to make new has two benefits.
Firstly, you are using metal that has been bought or given to you by your family or spouse. It does not matter whether it is broken or worn, or you just don’t like it anymore. This old, worn or unliked metal has a history that is tied to you. Is it an heirloom? a gift? Something you treated yourself to? Whatever the answer this metal can all be used to make new pieces that you will treasure and use. This means it will not sit forever in a box in a room.
Secondly every gram that you have sitting in that box will save you a fair amount of cost.
In this financial climate Gold and Silver has increased in price hugely. In fact, since covid the price has gone mad, and it has up to this point remained high.
The same can be said for many stones. Diamonds, Sapphires, and Rubies can normally be used again. Emeralds can be a problem and the lessor stones the same.
So the same rules apply if you can use it, use it, you wont regret it.

Engagement rings
With the last of the Christmas holidays well and truly behind us our thoughts turn to Spring and holidays and light evenings. It also turns many young (and not so young) couple’s thoughts to getting engaged.
The traditional view is that the man goes out to some shops and chooses a ring for his soon to be fiancé and that she says (hopefully) Yes and then they start to plan for the future.
Every time I get someone come into see me asking for an engagement ring, I always ask the same question.
“Does your fiancé know about this?” If the answer is No, I ask, “why not” The answer generally is “it’s a surprise.”
Many people nowadays are living together well before they decide to get married, So.

In this day and age surely it is better if an engagement ring is chosen by both parties and designed to reflect them
I make engagement rings to my client’s own designs and they take into them elements of what they both have shared. For example, I have made engagement rings that are based on favourite flowers, animals, places and even experiences.
The idea is that you are making a ring that is an original design that is for you and your fiancé alone.
Not choosing a ring that is made in thousands from a pad in a window.

Thank you all for the responses to the lessons posts. Sorry that I am a bit late in getting back to you all. I have been trying to work out how I am going to run them.
So, I have decided that I will start the lessons from the first of March 2024. (The weather should be a bit better by then). I am going to run taster sessions. That will be two hours. Also, I am thinking of six- and ten-hours lessons over a couple of weeks. Then longer courses for more serious people.
I will provide initially 15 grams of Silver to make or go towards making the first piece.
The idea is that you will leave even the taster session with a piece of jewellery that you have (with my help) made.
I will also provide all the solder and tools. The lessons will be held at my workshop in Rushden.
I will be doing two-hour morning sessions two mornings of the week and two-hour afternoon sessions two hours of the week also I will do one evening two hour session.
The cost will be £35.00 per hour. You will need to call me on the phone so that we can discuss what you would like to do. So, I will be emailing all those people who have been interested again.

Happy New Year to everybody and all the best for 2024.
I have always been concerned about what people think about the trade that I have been in for over fifty years and that people generally have no idea of what is involved in making good quality jewellery. Nowadays you can go on Youtube or Facebook or any of the platforms and watch someone make a ring or bracelet or more or less any piece of jewellery. But you cannot get the experience of actually sitting at the bench with tools and fire and metal.
That has bought me to a decision. I am going to offer to people lessons at the bench.
This is not in a classroom or school, but one to one with me at my bench.
I will supply all the tools although if you have some of your own you are welcome to bring them. I will also supply 15 grams of Silver including the solder to each person interested for making their first piece. If you wish to use Gold or add stones we can include those in the piece you are making but you will have to pay for them (and bring them) yourself.

My qualifications are.
I was trained by probably the best craftsmen in the world at the time at probably the best Jewellers of the time, Cartier.
I have been in the trade for over Fifty years and have made just about any type of jewellery you can think of.
