The organic rawness of an Emily Nixon piece is connected to the landscape, the permanent natural materials it’s formed from, but also the found objects that are used to create it. Lifelong tools found on the tideline, moor or archive. Fossils, stones, bones and dried seaweed – intuitively pressed and shaped to create texture, weight and form.

The process creates a visual language that connects not only the pieces to one another, but also to the found objects that have inspired them. Collections of objects curated and collected. An ever-evolving form of self-expression.

‘Tresco’ Nori

Emily first experimented with drying seaweed and casting it into precious metals over a decade ago. The Nori emerged as one of the first refined interpretations of these often wild, bold experiments. Worked from the raw original cast, the shape formed into delicate curls that catch and embrace the natural sapphires.

When selecting the stones for the ‘Tresco’ Nori, Emily selected a palette of pastel Montana sapphires amid the teals and greens of Australian stones, set in 18ct rose gold. Under different light sources, the colours become deeper and richer, mirroring the ever-changing hues of the seascape.

Each piece is set by hand in our West Penwith studio.

“With their remarkable resilience against time, these boundaries have become sacred monuments of the everyday - the granite and earth still stand where they were first laid, serving the purpose imagined by their prehistoric makers. Today, they are mostly driven or cycled past, dissolving into impressionistic strokes of foxglove pink, lichen green, granite grey.”
