Part 3 of making this three carat diamond platinum ring.

At this stage, the ring has been pre polished and is ready for setting. This video focuses on letting in the main three carat diamond and making sure it sits perfectly level.

Before starting, I mark one end of the diamond and the corresponding claw so the stone always returns to exactly the same orientation.

I then coat the inside of the setting with a Sharpie. As the diamond is gently pressed into place, it leaves marks at the contact points. I remove a tiny amount of platinum from only those areas, then repeat the process until the stone sits securely and completely level.

Finally, I check it both under the microscope and with the naked eye. The microscope reveals the smallest contact points, but stepping back is just as important for judging the overall position of the stone.

Next comes the final setting.

Part 1: Designing a three carat diamond ring in platinum.

This ring is cast as one complete piece, but the CAD model is deliberately kept quite simple. I leave out the finest details because platinum does not reproduce tiny cast detail particularly well.

Instead, I use a hybrid approach. The main structure is designed and cast in one piece, then all the intricate details are added and refined by hand afterwards. This gives me far greater control over the finish, proportions and tiny details that make the finished ring feel exceptional.

I also 3D scan the stones so I can design around their exact dimensions, rather than relying on standard measurements. Even the areas you will never see are carefully considered, including how the platinum will flow through the mould and how to reduce the risk of the investment breaking away during casting.

Next comes casting the model in platinum.

I’m about to make this three carat diamond ring in platinum, completely from scratch.

The design work is complete and the platinum casting is next. From there, I’ll be finishing the setting by hand before setting the centre diamond and all the smaller diamonds.

Yesterday, I asked whether people would be interested in knowing more about the story behind my work, rather than only seeing the jewellery and how I make it.

The response made it clear that many of you would.

This is a very personal part of my story, but it explains a great deal about why I approach life and my work the way I do.

It explains why I take on technically difficult pieces, why I have taught myself so many different skills, why I’m constantly looking for new challenges and why travel, exploration and meeting people around the world remain such an important part of my life.

My experiences taught me to adapt, to persevere and to find another way when the conventional one doesn’t work.

Why do I operate the way I do?

Why am I in the workshop on a Sunday, after being here until 11 o’clock last night?

Why do I take on technically challenging pieces, learn so many different skills myself and travel around the world in search of gemstones, people and new experiences?

A few years ago, I produced a book about my work. At the back, I wrote about the personal experiences that shaped me and explain a lot about why I am the way I am today.
