Welcome the people of Shaw and surrounding areas.
Did you know it was once reported in the national press that Shaw and Crompton had more millionaires per capita than any other town in the world. Shaw was nicknamed the ‘Golden City’
We are a small group of business minded people, there is noticeable change (for the good) in our surrounding villages, but Shaw seems to be left behind. There’s an opportunity to change this, but we need your help and support for this to be a success.
So, what are we proposing:
The final Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm, a market, not the declining market we have been used to, but a thriving, bustling market on our High Street. One full of artisan stall holders, the finest bread and pie makers, vintage sweet sellers, original artists, local gin makers, handmade home ware, original jewellery, local, fresh fruit and veg, wood carvers, hand made pottery, the best florists, scrumptious local cake makers…the list is endless. We know these fantastic people are here, but they travel miles to other markets, because there is nowhere to showcase on their own doorstep.
At the moment ‘Mill Town Market’ seems an appropriate name, linking nicely to Shaws heritage, this is certainly up for discussion and any other suggestions are most welcome.
The plan:
48 stall holders (only the finest in their field)
Why 48?, at its peak Shaw and Crompton had 48 working cotton mills. These are to be placed the length of the high street. We are hoping with natural growth the market will extend to the car park, allowing another 36 stalls of similar quality.
We envisage a Spring 2024 launch.
The market will be child and dog friendly with food and drink mobile vehicles etc Pizza, gin, beers, coffee. Live music will be played throughout the day.
We will not be a market with bouncy castles and stalls selling bric-a-brac. We have seen this work in many other towns throughout England. Macclesfield, Levenshulme and Altrincham are fine nearby examples.
So what do we need:
This is still at early stage, we need local government and council backing, we need the support of the community, we need the fantastic artisan stall holders, we need the incredible mobile coffee and food trailers, we need local businesses, we need volunteers and like minded business people to offer their valuable wisdom and time.
Our market research shows the people of Shaw are crying out for change, every weekend they’re travelling to Uppermill or Royton for a local drink. Not everyone wants to sit in a Wetherspoon. A market like ours, and by ours we mean yours can bring new business to the area, new artisan restaurants and bars could pop up on the high street - we know, we’ve seen it happen.

We believe in total transparency and trust, any questions will be answered openly and honestly.
We thank you for reading this and hope you are as excited as we are, together we can make change happen.
Best wishes
