⚔️ The Sanctus Cross ⚔️
Long before the cross became associated with organised religion, the equal-armed cross appeared across ancient cultures as one of humanity’s simplest and most enduring symbols.
Four lines extending equally from a central point is a representation of balance, order and the meeting of opposing forces.
Its four arms have been interpreted in many ways: the four cardinal directions, the changing seasons, the classical elements, and the cycles through which the natural world moves. At its centre lies a fifth, unspoken point, the place where these forces meet and become whole. Which I used as an opportunity to place small flower in, signifying the elements coming together to grow life.
The form can also be understood as the intersection of two worlds. The horizontal line evokes the earthly plane, while the vertical reaches above and below. Their meeting creates a symbolic axis or centre, a point of stillness around which everything else turns.
In ancient solar imagery, the equal-armed cross was sometimes enclosed within a circle, creating what is now often called the solar or sun cross. Its geometry has been associated with the movement of the sun, the turning year and the cyclical rhythms of nature.
Within later esoteric traditions, the fourfold cross continued to embody ideas of equilibrium, wholeness and opposing forces held in harmony, earth and sky, light and darkness, beginning and ending.
