🌊 Five days to NEOS…

The studio is beginning to fill with pieces inspired by different moods of the sea.

These are some of my latest experiments with copper and patina. The vivid turquoise — almost Egyptian blue — felt as though it needed the cool brightness of silver beside it. Others are darker and moodier: deep water, gathering clouds, that feeling just before a storm. And where I’ve polished the patina back to reveal flashes of warm copper, I see the first light of dawn breaking through the darkness.

That’s one of the things I love about working with copper. You never quite know what magic the patina recipe is going to give you. The most beautiful part is simply responding to what emerges.

And in just five days, I get to share all of this with you!

For NEOS, I’ll be opening my home studio in Montrose and welcoming visitors in to see where and how Tangle & Haar jewellery is made. You can see the tools, materials and processes I use, discover how the Scottish coast finds its way into my work, and browse jewellery made in copper, silver, brass and locally collected sea glass.

I’m looking forward to meeting people, talking about making, and sharing a little of the joy I find in the sea and in creating my jewellery 🥰

A little R&R… of the smoky kind 🔥

This morning I joined a fab group of potters for a pit firing organised by Irene Hughes from Clay Half.

My little pot was made from clay I collected at Lunan Bay. There’s something special about taking a material directly from the landscape and then firing it in one of the oldest and simplest ways — earth, wood, fire and time.

I keep thinking about all the people who made things this way long before kilns and workshops existed. Hands shaping clay, gathering wood, tending a fire… and then that same magical wait to discover what the flames created.

For now, everything is tucked away in the pit doing its thing. In around 48 hours we’ll uncover it all and see what survived — and what wonderful marks, colours and surprises the fire has left behind. 🤞🔥

🌿 From finished pieces to new beginnings…

These little Dog Rose pieces that were on display in Rowen and Rose are heading off to their new home this week — always a lovely feeling, although I confess I get slightly attached to some of them! 🤍

Meanwhile, the workbench is busy again. Copper is being cut, shaped and textured, and there’s a little bit of alchemy happening in the patination pots. I never quite know exactly what the copper will give me when it comes out — which is part of the joy of working with it.

I’m getting everything ready for the Gourdon Coffee Morning this Saturday, 5th September, 10am–1pm, where I’ll have a selection of Tangle & Haar jewellery with me.

And after that… NEOS North East Open Studios

I’ll be back at the bench preparing pieces for next Saturday, 12th September when I open my house up to let everyone see me studio and my jewellery. It feels as though September is going to be a wonderfully busy month of making, meeting people and sharing the stories behind the jewellery.

From dog roses to tangled seaweed, copper patinas and silver — there’s a lot happening in my little Montrose studio just now. I hope you might pop in and visit 🌊🌿

🍂 And just like that, autumn is here…

The harvest is in. The rowans are glowing, the rose hips are red and the brambles are heavy with fruit.

The days are shortening and there’s a coolness in the evenings now. Time for warm sweaters, cosy fires, crisp light and those deep, saturated colours that come with the changing season.

And on the coast, autumn brings something else I love — stormy skies, wilder weather and restless seas. 🌊

It feels like a season of change, and of new inspiration. After the excitement of the last few weeks, I’m back at my bench, making and planning for what comes next for Tangle & Haar.

✨ What a day! ✨

I’m home from Colinton Arts with a very full heart and a huge smile! What an absolutely fabulous day!

One of the loveliest things about being part of an exhibition like this is the people you meet. It was such a pleasure to spend the day with Wendy Davidson Wendy Davidson, Alan Paterson Alan Paterson , Lindsey Alexander from Colinton Gallery and Framing, Zander, and Marc from Greystone Gallery, who curated this wonderful exhibition.

And then there were all of you who came through the door... ❤️

I had so many brilliant conversations with interesting, curious and lovely people — about life, art, making, the sea, sea glass, Scotland's coastline and, of course, jewellery. Hearing such warm comments about my work and watching people stop, look closely, ask questions and discover the stories behind the pieces was just wonderful.

There is something quite magical about putting things we've made out into the world and then having people come to see them. That's what brings an exhibition to life.

A little over a year ago, I couldn't have imagined Tangle & Haar being here. Today I stood in a beautiful Edinburgh gallery, surrounded by art and creativity, talking about jewellery I made with my own hands.

I'm going to allow myself to feel very, very happy about that 😊

And the best bit? This isn't just a one-day affair! The exhibition at Colinton Arts continues until 3 October, so if you couldn't make it today, there's still plenty of time to visit and see the wonderful collection of work — including a little corner of the Scottish coast from Tangle & Haar. 🌊

What a week.... What a day!

Tomorrow, Tangle & Haar is off to Edinburgh! ✨

After such a wonderful evening at Rowen and Rose in the POP By ProMo this week, I’m packing up my jewellery again — this time to take it to Colinton Arts, where I’ve been very kindly invited by artist Wendy Davidson to exhibit some of my work.

And yes… the Tangle Wreath that I unveiled on Tues is coming too. 🌿🌊

When I first started making jewellery just over a year ago, drilling pieces of sea glass I’d picked up on the beach, I could never have imagined where it might lead. Little by little, I’ve learned to work with silver, copper and brass, found my own way of translating the Scottish coast into metal, and — perhaps most importantly — discovered just how much joy there is in making.
Tomorrow feels like another rather special milestone.

I’m excited, a little nervous, and enormously grateful to Wendy for the invitation. And I still have moments when I look at that necklace and think, I actually made that!

Edinburgh, here we come. ❤️
