Really excited to be taking part in this fabulous new Art Trail. Ashbourne is a great location for a bank holiday enjoying the art and lovely brasseries and restaurants. The town is close to Irlam and Dove dale which have plenty of walks and cycle routes to explore. Perfect weekend 😍

So this is using a microwelder, my new absolutely favourite studio toy ever to make a chain from 4mm jump rings. The tiny 2200 degrees C flame can be focused on such a small area the jump ting and the others in the chain are not melted by the heat.
I can also resize rings with heat sensitive stones (I do also protect the stone by burying it in silicone carbide).
Altogether it's brilliant πŸ‘

Using a microwelder to make a short chain from 4mm jump rings. The flame is 2200 degrees C so can melt solder really quickly and the localised heat doesn't melt the adjacent loops in the chain

Using an AWLTEC A+ microwelder to make a chain.
Yes I know i could just buy it but where's the fun in that πŸ˜€
So this as you can see generates a tiny flame.
This is 2200 degrees C using an atomiser mix of 3:1 methylated spirit to acetone. The charcoal block creats a 'reducing' atmosphere which reduces the oxidation of the silver ( that impedes the flow of solder)
This is definitely my favourite new toy !

This is what successful enamel on steel looks like - no chipping or peeling perfectly fused surface and detail added by sifting a black enamel through steel mesh
This had a white WG ball ground coat, a hard (high firing) white and lastly the black .

Preparing steel for enamelling .
This is ultra low carbon steel which is really important to use if the enamel is to fuse with stabilityl. Even low carbon steel causes issues such as pitting and bubbling due to the production of gases at the surface when heated.
Ultra low carbon steel does need perfect preparation- no grease on the surface and a 'key' for groundcoat to adhere to. Can you skip the ground coat? No ! Ionly achieved this with 2 enamels and have tested about 20. The whole process leading to success has been constant experimentation!

Soldering steel and other tricky jobs like resizing rings with heat sensitive stones, or soldering pieces close to enamel needs a very hot tiny flame . The set up was a bit of a palaver but only have to do it once. It's worth the expense and thanks to Betts Metal supplies for giving me an Association of Contemporary Jewellers discount πŸ˜€
It arrived really quickly and definitely recommend Betts if anyone is thinking of investing in one of these.

Some work with steel! I've been experimenting with jewellery enamel formulated for silver and copper to persuade it to bond to low carbon steel. After lots of fiddling with surface prep, ground coat choices and enamel compliance- not to mention the very different firing temperatures I finally got there! Not all enamels work but most I've used are ok. The main thing is to heat and cool steel slowly.

Some new pieces with enamel on steel. It's taken a while to figure out how to get jewellery enamel formulated for silver and copper to fuse onto a steel base. After much experimenting with type of steel, preparation, ground coats and testing firing temperatures I got there in the end.
Having a science background helped me to understand why the enamel need higher firing temperatures and finding that steel doesn't like being 'heat shocked '! so slow heating and cooling from the kiln firing essential.
Some pieces are inspired by rusty railings and containers with peeling paint close to a nearby quarry.
Other pieces are designed from decaying machine parts at the base of derelict quarry sites.
I've used features of the steel - iron breakthrough and controlled rusting to inform my design process. Using rust as a feature may raise concerns about transfer onto clothing but solved by sealing with transparent acrylic lacquer.
I'm looking forward to exploring further the use of steel in my jewellery. It is after all the most recycled material world wide

Happy new year followers! I just want to start by giving a shout out Ashbourne Arts Trail-a new venture for 2026, in a beautiful market town. To apply visit their instagram artbourne.arttrail closing date 31st January.
This is a post about using a Durston mini rolling mill to add texture to your jewellery, to help anyone starting out using a rolling mill.
There are many types of mill available varying in complexity and size. I'd avoid buying a student level bargain one because the rollers rust!
Durston is a reputable brand with plenty of choice available.
Tips for use:
1. Keep the mill dry and away from moisture- I protect mine with a plastic cover when it's not in use
2. Keep the rollers clean. Don't use water!- I use a methylated spirit soaked rag kept in a sealed container well away from sources of heat such as torches. I roll this through the mill if they need a clean.
3. Never roll steel against the rollers it'll damage them, especially steel wire
4. If you want to create a paper cut out type of texture use thick paper, a sharp craft knife and a self healing cutting mat.
5. For delicate items such as leaf skeletons, cheesecloth or feathers tape these onto thick paper with transparent tape, roll with the item facing upwards - make sure the tape doesn't stick to the rollers!
6. ALWAYS anneal the metal you want to texture. Sterling silver imprints best when a fine layer of fine silver has been deposited on top by depletion gilding.
To do this remove the copper in sterling silver by heating, adding to safety pickle and repeat until heating no loner brings copper to the surface evidenced by no grey 'bloom'.You're finished depletion gilding when a white surface is present which is your fine silver layer. Fine silver, being softer than sterling, will pick up prints better especially if fine detail from feathers is needed.
it's great fun experimenting with this, one of my favorite pieces of kit ❀️
