"Christmas in the Brothel" (Norwegian: Julaften i bordell) is an oil-on-canvas painting by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1903.

The artwork portrays a group of women in a brothel who have just finished decorating a Christmas tree, juxtaposing the festive atmosphere of Christmas with the somber reality of their environment. This contrast reflects Munch's exploration of complex emotional and social themes.

During the period when Munch created this painting, he was experiencing personal and professional challenges, including the collapse of a portrait commission in Hamburg. To cope with his resulting anxieties, he turned to alcohol and visited a brothel in Lübeck, which inspired this work. The painting is considered "ironic, sentimentally unholy" and serves as a commentary on both the upper-class household of his patron, Max Linde, and Munch's own pietistic upbringing.

For those interested in viewing the original painting, it is housed at the Munch Museum in Oslo, which holds a comprehensive collection of Munch's works.

"Le Villi" (The Willis or The Fairies Dancing) is an enchanting oil on canvas painting created in 1906 by Italian artist Bartolomeo Giuliano (1825–1909). This work falls within the genre of allegorical painting, a style that uses symbolic figures and narratives to convey deeper meanings.

The painting draws inspiration from the legend of the "Wilis," ethereal spirits of young women who, having died of broken hearts, rise from their graves to haunt the night. In folklore, these spectral beings are known to dance men to their deaths as an act of vengeance.

Art critics have lauded Giuliano's ability to convey the haunting allure of the Wilis, noting his "delicate sense of elegiac poetry" that permeates the painting.

The original painting is housed in the Gallerie d'Italia in Milan, Italy.

Carl Larsson, Swedish (1853-1919)

Carl Larsson's 1881 painting Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf in the Forest offers a fresh, intimate take on the classic fairy tale.

Unlike traditional depictions, Larsson presents Little Red Riding Hood as a serene, composed figure, while the wolf is rendered with a gentler demeanor, adding depth to the narrative.

The lush forest setting and warm color palette reflect Larsson's love for nature, while his signature attention to detail offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale, making it a standout example of his late 19th-century work

The painting is categorized within the genre of Realism, with elements of Symbolism due to its nuanced portrayal of the fairy tale. The original is in a private collection.

Jubilee Procession in a Cornish Village, June 1897 by George Sherwood Hunter

"Jubilee Procession in a Cornish Village, June 1897," by George Sherwood Hunter, is a stunning celebration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, bursting with life and color.

Set in a Cornish fishing village, likely Newlyn or Mousehole, it captures a glowing lantern-lit procession, with villagers in radiant white illuminating the twilight.

This monumental masterpiece, considered Hunter's finest work, underwent a dramatic restoration in 2010, revealing hidden details and vibrant faces after over a century.

Now housed at the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro, it remains a dazzling tribute to Cornish heritage and Victorian festivity."

"Dance of the Hour" often refered to as "Spring Dance" (Beltane/May Day) or "Nymphs Dancing to Pan's Flute" it is the Spring/Lighter accompaniment to Tomanek's "Fire Dance" (Likely Samhain or Beltane style festival)

Joseph Tomanek’s "Dance of the Hour" (painted in 1934) depicts nymphs dancing around a fire, inspired by mythological themes of beauty and nature. The scene evokes Pan’s enchanting flute, symbolizing wild ecstasy. Tomanek (1889–1974), a Czech-American artist, used romantic realism to bring this mythical moment to life.

The original painting was sold at auction in 2014 and the whereabouts are currently unknown, it likely entered a private collection.
