One of the best parts of running our Design Your Own Silver Ring Workshops is seeing the ideas people bring to life.
We had to shine a spotlight on this one.

Using our wide wax upgrade instead of the standard wax, this bold oval signet ring was carved by hand before being cast in silver. The maker chose to leave the file marks, creating a beautifully weathered texture, before carefully engraving the sweetest little bird into the surface. Tucked away on the side is a fingerprint too—a subtle, super personal detail that makes the ring completely unique.

We always say, “if you can’t draw it, you probably won’t be able to engrave it.” It’s one of the most challenging techniques in the workshop, which makes it even more exciting when someone pulls it off so beautifully.

To finish, we oxidised the engraving so the bird really stands out against the silver.

Every ring made in our workshops tells a different story, and this one is full of thoughtful details that will be treasured for years to come.

One of the most satisfying stages of making a silver ring.

Before any texture is added, the silver is carefully shaped using a rawhide mallet. Made from buffalo hide, it gently forms the metal without leaving marks, making it the perfect tool for creating a perfectly round ring.

Once the shape is just right, it’s time to switch to a metal hammer and add a hammered finish, giving each ring its own unique character.

We’ve been running our Ringsmiths workshops for over seven years, teaching people the traditional techniques needed to create a ring from start to finish. No experience is needed—just a willingness to have a go and make something you’ll wear for years to come.

Two locations, the same intimate workshop experience. ✨

With over 7 years of teaching experience and decades of jewellery-making knowledge between us (slightly scary to think about!), we’ll guide you through designing and carving your own ring in wax before casting it in sterling silver, or upgrading to gold.

Over the years we’ve helped people create heirloom pieces, mark milestones, make memories, and share special moments. It’s a privilege to be part of those stories, and we wouldn’t change it for the world. ❤️

The natural grain left by the cuttlebone casting process makes every piece completely unique, creating textures that can never be replicated.

This bold statement ring was created from one of our shield signet blanks during our Make & Cast a Signet Ring workshop. With a wide selection of shapes and sizes to choose from, each ring begins with a form that speaks to you.

From there, you decide how to finish it. Keep the organic cuttlebone texture or refine the surface for a cleaner look. You can also add gold plating, gemstones, or engraving by our master engraver to create a piece that’s uniquely yours. ✨

It may be a bit gloomy outside but we’re totally starry-eyed 🤩 over these golden beauties! ✨
These ring were all created in our Design Your Own Ring workshops and showcase the ever popular and traditional star setting style. ⭐️ 💍
This is where a gemstone (of any shape) is set into the centre of a hand-carved, star-shaped pattern. The gemstone is then secured by raising small grains of metal from the star’s points to hold the girdle of the stone. Often used on smaller stones to make them appear larger.

When choosing this setting style the jeweller will guide you on the size of gemstone, based on the available space on your ring. This is to ensure there is enough room for our setters to engrave the spokes of the stars around the gemstone.

At The Ringsmiths, we are passionate about teaching traditional jewellery-making techniques, with each workshop centred around a different craft or process. With over seven years of experience teaching jewellery workshops, we’ve welcomed thousands of people into our South London studio, creating a relaxed and intimate environment where everyone receives plenty of guidance and support throughout the day.

While we offer a couple of classes where you can create your own signet ring, our Make & Cast a Signet Ring workshop focuses on the ancient art of cuttlebone casting. Dating back centuries, cuttlebone casting has been used by jewellers around the world to create one-of-a-kind pieces. The natural structure of the cuttlefish bone leaves behind a distinctive organic grain, meaning every casting has its own unique character.

During the workshop, you’ll create an impression of a signet ring blank within the cuttlebone mould before pouring molten metal into it, allowing you to experience the magic of casting firsthand. Once revealed, your ring can be finished to celebrate the unique textures created by the casting process, or those textures can be removed for a cleaner, more traditional signet ring finish. This classic finish is particularly well suited to engraving, and after the workshop your ring can be engraved by our master hand engraver for an additional bespoke touch.

It’s one of our longest workshops and certainly one of our most memorable, offering a rare opportunity to work with molten metal and create a signet ring that is entirely your own from start to finish.

A little behind the scenes with Milena & Ros ✨


Last week we headed down to Brighton for the to source gemstones for upcoming The Ringsmiths workshops — one of our favourite parts of what we do.

Every gemstone we bring back is chosen by us, ready for you to set into the jewellery you’ll make in the workshop. We look for stones with colour, character and that hard-to-describe feeling when one feels truly special.

Having Milena’s trained gemologist eye alongside our shared love of beautiful gemstones means we can be wonderfully picky — carefully choosing stones we’re excited to bring back to the studio 💎

We also spent the day meeting new gemstone dealers, discovering beautiful new stones, enjoying a little Brighton seaside escape… and of course Pepper the poodle came too, taking her role as gemstone assistant very seriously 🐩
