Last week I saw a great friend from New York for dinner he told me a brilliant story about Dustin Hoffman starving himself for three days and only drinking coffee to become wretched enough for that famous scene in Marathon Man with Olivier. After the scene was in the can, Olivier lent over to Hoffman who was still in character and said, “yes that was all very good but why don’t you try acting?”
