A fine Second World War ‘1940’ George Medal awarded to Warrant Officer James Victor Saunders of the Royal Air Force, late Royal Naval Air Service will be offered at Noonans in their sale of Orders, Decorations, Medals and Militaria on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The group is estimated to fetch £3,000-4,000 [lot 27].

Mark Quayle, Medal Specialist and Associate Director of Noonans commented: “Bomb disposal is fraught with danger at the best of times - but to undertake it whilst on the ‘front-line’ of the Battle of Britain, with bombs falling around you, is another matter altogether. Saunders was obviously a very brave, calm and experienced Armourer - and the award of his George Medal was clearly justified. This lot is being sold as part of a Fine Collection of Medals, the Property of a Lady, Part 2.”

An outstanding and rare Great War ‘Gallipoli’ Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, group of five awarded to Acting Leading Seaman William James Pierce of the Howe Battalion, Royal Naval Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve will be offered at Noonans in their sale of Orders, Decorations, Medals and Militaria on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. They are expected to fetch £15,000-20,000 [lot 119].

Mark Quayle, Medal Specialist and Associate Director of Noonans commented: "Pierce was an exceptional serviceman, and the epitome of grit and determination. After covering the retreat of his comrades during the disastrous third attack on Krithia, Gallipoli, Pierce decided to save himself from the trenches. Being virtually the last man out, and despite bleeding from his own wounds, he scooped up a ‘wounded man in his arms and stumbled blindly back to safety and shelter.’ “

A Second War Distinguished Service Order pair attributed to Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Grant Garrow of the Highland Light Infantry, who organised and led the ‘Pat O'Leary’ escape line will be offered at Noonans in their sale of Orders, Decorations, Medals and Militaria on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. They are expected to fetch £2,000- 3,000 [lot 61].

Jim Carver, Client Liason at Noonans explained: “Garrow who was serving with the British Expeditionary Force, was a true escaper. After the fall of France, and walking south trying to find a route back home, he became instrumental in organising and leading the “Pat O’Leary” escape line.”

He continues: “This mission was not entirely successful as Garrow was arrested in October 1941, brought to trial and sentenced to three years and six months solitary confinement in the Dordogne. His role as head of the escape line was replaced by Albert Guérisse, who together with Nancy Wake, led the attempt to free Garrow from prison. With a tailor-made prison guard uniform, Wake bribed a guard to turn a blind eye, and Garrow, clad in the uniform, walked out of confinement six months later. He finally got across the Pyrenees with other escapers reaching the British Consulate in Barcelona on 1 February 1943. Arriving in Gibraltar, a few days later where, he was flown back to England.”

A very rare bronze medal celebrating American Independence Libertas Americana, dating from c. 1783 is to be offered in an auction of Coins and Historical Medals on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Noonans. It is expected to fetch £4,000-5,000 and is being sold by a private collector who bought it 50 years ago.

As Bradley Hopper, Head of the Coin Department at Noonans explains: “Conceived by Benjamin Franklin while serving as the American minister in Paris, the Libertas Americana was intended not simply to celebrate independence, but to acknowledge the decisive assistance afforded by France. Franklin first outlined the reverse in a letter to Robert Livingston of 4 March 1782: the infant Hercules, emblematic of the young United States, strangles the serpents of Burgoyne and Cornwallis while France, in the guise of Minerva, shields him from the British lion. Esprit-Antoine Gibelin refined the composition and Augustin Dupré engraved the dies; completed early in 1783, the medal bears on the reverse the dates of the rebels’ victories at Saratoga and Yorktown.”

He continues: “On 15 April 1783 Franklin wrote to Livingston ‘I have caused to be struck here [in Paris] the Medal which I formerly mentioned to you, the Design of which you seem’d to approve. I inclose one of them in Silver for the President of Congress, and one in Copper for yourself: The Impression on Copper is thought to appear best’. Looking at the specimen offered for sale here it is easy to see why this view was held; the delicate relief is rendered spectacularly, while the rich, earthy patina gives the medal an elevated, almost classical quality

He finishes: “This handsome and evocative medal was purchased by a relative of the current vendor on the bicentenary of American Independence; we are delighted at the opportunity to bring it to market now, on the 250th anniversary of that great event.” [lot 804]

Among the 360 lots that will be offered at Noonans in an auction of Coins and Historical Medals on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, is a very rare and attractive medieval Scottish Gold Coin from the reign of James I (1406-1437) that is estimated at £4,000-6,000.

With a very good provenance, the coin was part of the prestigious David McFarlan Collection [lot 687].
