An afternoon in the workshop for me today! Not sure what I’m going to create yet, I’ll let the sherds inspire me… In the meantime, (and in my best “Blue Peter” presenter voice), here are a few (brooches) I have made earlier!

A pair of 1935 King George V silver Jubilee commemorative pottery “Union Jack” cufflinks, made from two very different shaped sherds and found by two mudlarks!

Let me explain…The cufflink on the left is made from a cup sherd, so is curved - I found this piece. The cufflink on the right is from a plate, so is flat and was so much easier to work with! This sherd was found by a fellow mudlark who kindly gifted to me. As always, I set myself a tricky task wanting to “match” the flag. I hope you like the result.

A pair of mudlarked-pottery cufflinks, linked to Charing Cross, London: featuring an interesting Victorian-era sherd from either Charing Cross Hospital, Station or Hotel.

Charing Cross derives its name from the medieval hamlet of Charing, which comes from the Old English word cering, meaning "bend," likely referring to the nearby curve of the River Thames. The area gained historical prominence when King Edward I commissioned a series of twelve memorial crosses between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife, Queen Eleanor of Castile, marking the stops of her funeral procession to Westminster Abbey. The final cross was erected at Charing, becoming the largest and most ornate of the series. This medieval cross stood for over 350 years until it was destroyed in 1647 during the English Civil Wars. The cross outside the station today, is a replica erected by the Victorians.

I never tire of creating with willow pattern sherds, particularly the “lovebirds”. 💙💙 This sherd did not have the complete image of the birds, but had enough for me to want to use it - creative thinking was needed! I decided to “mirror” the images of the birds and set them at an angle in a plain 20mm stainless steel mount. I really like the result. I hope you do too.

Thank you to my lovely muddy mate for gifting me this piece.

It certainly feels that spring has sprung here in Chalkwell, (well in my workshop anyway)! I think this pretty brass brooch mount compliments the floral Thames-found sherd beautifully. The perfect accessory this spring! £15 plus P&P.

I was gifted this rather unusual, late Victorian cameo-style “knight” sherd by my muddy mate, .mudlark. After much deliberation on which mount to use, I decided upon a stainless steel Bolo bracelet. I hope you like the result.
