On a baking hot summer’s evening, The Goldsmiths' Company hosted its annual Freeman’s Dinner in the magnificent Livery Hall. This is a perfect opportunity to re-connect with friends from the trade as well as develop new acquaintances with interesting experiences from other sectors, furthering the goals of the organisation.

It is also one of the few occasions when we can bring a partner! And here is my #1 supporter who rarely appears here!

This was one of the most wonderful days in my professional career. I became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in The Court Room at Goldsmiths’ Hall.

The Company is one of the twelve great Guilds, and will celebrate its 700th anniversary next year. Since its inception, its priority was the independent verification of fine metals, a noble cause which continues to this day. By law.

It has played an important part in my career. I have celebrated three graduation ceremonies at The Hall and all my jewellery features a London Assay Office hallmark. It’s no secret that it’s one of my favourite places in the world.

It was a particular joy to celebrate this occasion with other friends in the trade - the lovely Lisa Levison who works tirelessly to promote natural diamonds, my former valuation tutor Rupert Huddy and the multi talented مهدی سعدیان.

It is one of the few Guilds which continues to support and educate its principal trade, and has always had a dedicated charitable arm. I could not be more delighted to be a part of this amazing institution.

What an eye opener this seminar was… “Marks of Deception, Fakes and Forgeries in Silver” at Goldsmiths’ Hall last week.

A brilliant hands-on course under expert tutelage illustrating how silver hallmarks can be revisited and cancelled due to a number of factors including deliberate misrepresentation or misguided alteration. Some of the pieces on display illustrated great ingenuity in historical recycling of formerly hallmarked pieces, thereby invalidating the existing marks. If you look carefully at the final image, you will notice the cross hatched engraving physically removing former hallmarks.

There are a handful of events which I value so much that everything else gets put to one side to accommodate them.

ORIGINALLUXURY Roundtables are one of those events. They explore in depth how technology can be used to authenticate and secure supply chains to ensure trust, integrity and brand value. The latest event, “Luxury in Acceleration,” took place on 6 May 2026 at Château Le Rosey, Switzerland.

The closed-door gathering brought together luxury executives, technology partners, academics, and industry leaders to discuss the evolving role of transparency, responsible practices, digital innovation and accountability across the luxury sector.

As always, it was a fascinating deep dive into how businesses should, and are, securing their supply chains to ensure value for both the business and clients. Thanks as always to Margot and her team for organising a fabulous, thought-provoking event.
