A good kitchen sort!

Claire and Jason have had one of the ultimate covid challenges: Both now work at home and they welcomed their first baby just before lockdown.

So their home has been working hard to contain them, and ‘stuff’ has been slowly expanding over the past year.

Today we tackled the kitchen. Crucially we were able to declutter enough stuff to rid them of the piles that had built up in the corners, on top of the fridge, the microwave, the cupboards, and fitted everything left inside the storage areas. This left the surface clear and the kitchen is now much easier on the eye

Before and After: Large appliances are often tricky in small kitchens, and on top of the fridge is not a bad solution - you just don’t want it to become a magnet for more!

Well saved the lovely drinks from its relegated position behind all these collected items.

It’s always worth getting everything out - even if you are ‘sure’ you know what’s in there and that it’s all ‘useful’.

We must have cut about 25% of this cupboard’s contents on the first swoop!

Before and After: The microwave had become an unwitting shelf and hang out area for ‘stuff’.

It was a real distraction on the eye, so it was great to get it clear and items either stored away in cupboards, or featured, like the cook books.

Me facing my Wardrobe FoMO. My wardrobe is in pretty good shape (2.5ft of rail plus 1 drawers of base layers) but having travelled for 6 months with 2 tops and 2 pairs of shorts, I also yearn for the simplicity of literally having only what you need. But clothing is also art and design to me. It’s architecture in fabric. And when I’m in a cultural capital rather than back-country wilderness I appreciate that side of it too. Realising that there were more beautiful clothes out there than I would ever have occasion to wear, more outfits I could dream up than are ever going to get put together, allowed me accept the limitations of a personal wardrobe. It’s great motivation to declutter ANYTHING that doesn’t make the grade, and to embrace what I have to enjoy it fully. It’s a great lens to look at any aspect of your life through.
