Are you making these 3 mistakes when storing your jewellery?

You might take great care of your jewellery when you’re wearing it, but how you store it matters just as much.

Here are three common mistakes I see people make regularly, that can lead to tarnishing, scratches and other damage:

1️⃣ Keeping everything together in one box

Rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings all thrown together? Chains can become tangled, while gemstones and harder metals can scratch more delicate pieces.

My advice: Use separate compartments or soft pouches, and hang necklaces individually where possible.

2️⃣ Storing jewellery in the bathroom

It might be convenient, but bathrooms are usually warm and humid. Moisture can speed up tarnishing, encourage corrosion and potentially damage more delicate materials such as pearls.

My advice: Keep your jewellery somewhere cool and dry. Anti-tarnish strips or silica gel packs can also help.

3️⃣ Putting jewellery away without cleaning it

Perfume, sweat, lotions and everyday dirt can remain on jewellery after you take it off. Over time, that build-up can dull its appearance and make it harder to clean.

My advice: Give regularly worn pieces a gentle wipe with a soft jewellery cloth before putting them away.

☀️ And my bonus tip: Avoid leaving jewellery in direct sunlight for long periods. Some gemstones can gradually lose colour with prolonged exposure.

When it comes to storing jewellery, remember, it's about separation, dryness and cleanliness.

Hope this post helps you keep your jewellery looking its best for longer, but if you'd like more advice or a piece of jewellery cleaned or repaired, either pop into the shop or book a consultation online with me using the link in the comments.

Should you buy pre-owned jewellery instead of new? 💎🤔

Many people think pre-owned jewellery is simply a way to save money... and while that's certainly true, it's far from the only benefit.

Pre-owned pieces often offer exceptional craftsmanship, unique designs that are no longer available on the high street, and a little bit of history and character that brand-new jewellery simply can't match.

At Stephen Alan's Jewellers, we have a huge selection of beautiful pre-owned jewellery, from timeless classics to one-of-a-kind treasures, all carefully inspected and ready to find a new home.

Why not pop in and see what hidden gems you can discover? 🔍💎

As the in-house goldsmith here at Stephen Alan's Jewellers...

I've spent more than 20 years repairing, restoring and caring for jewellery, so I've seen plenty of pieces that have been accidentally damaged by well-meaning owners trying to clean them at home.

Keeping your jewellery clean is important, but there are a few things I'd always recommend avoiding.

1️⃣ Don't use abrasive cleaners or toothpaste

It might sound like an old household tip, but toothpaste is slightly abrasive and can leave tiny scratches on gold. Over time, those scratches can dull the finish of your jewellery and make it lose some of its shine.

2️⃣ Don't soak your jewellery for too long

Leaving gold jewellery in cleaning solutions for extended periods might seem like a good way to remove dirt, but it's rarely necessary. Prolonged soaking can affect certain gemstones, loosen adhesives used in some pieces and allow cleaning solution to work its way into areas that are difficult to rinse properly.

*A few minutes in warm, soapy water is usually all you need before giving it a gentle clean with a soft brush.*

3️⃣ Don't scrub too hard

A soft toothbrush and warm, soapy water are usually all you need for routine cleaning. Scrubbing too vigorously or using stiff brushes can scratch the gold or even loosen gemstones if the settings are already worn.

Remember...keeping your gold jewellery looking its best doesn't have to be complicated. A gentle clean at home every now and then, combined with an occasional professional clean and inspection, will help keep your favourite pieces sparkling for years to come.

Have a fantastic day, and if you're ever unsure how to care for a particular piece of jewellery, pop into the shop for a chat. I'm always happy to offer advice.
