✨ From practice to commission… ✨

One of my favourite things about learning a new jewellery-making skill is finding a way to put it into practice in the studio. 💍

Here’s the finished double gallery claw setting I made for a beautiful pendant, featuring a cushion and pear-shaped cubic zirconia. I absolutely loved learning this technique during my stone setting course at Jewellers Academy Brighton, so I was determined not to let those new skills sit unused!

So when I received a commission for this size E open ring, I decided to use the same technique. A 7mm clear cubic zirconia, beautifully held in a double gallery claw setting, finished with a little silver star ⭐️.

There’s something so satisfying about taking a skill that felt challenging when I first learnt it and then using it to create a piece for a customer. It’s all about practice, patience and perseverance!

I’m definitely going to keep practising those stone-setting skills and see where they take me next. ✨

✨ FINAL DAY – GRAIN & STAR SETTING ✨

What a way to finish five incredible days at the Jewellers Academy Brighton! 💍✨

Today was definitely one of my favourite days, learning the art of grain and star setting with honestly most patient jewellery teacher, Hayley. 🥰

Hayley took us through each step, from preparing the metal and creating the grains to setting the stones and finishing the piece. The finale was putting everything we’d learnt into practice by setting a stone on a D-shaped silver ring – and I was so pleased with the result! 💚💜✨

I’m now on the train home and honestly can’t believe how much I’ve learnt over these five days. It’s been challenging, sometimes frustrating 😂, but incredibly rewarding.

I’ve come away with a whole new set of skills, a huge amount of inspiration and, most importantly, the confidence to keep practising and developing my stone-setting skills.

I can’t wait to bring everything I’ve learnt to life in the Silver by Golden studio! 🔨✨

Day Four – Flush Setting 💎✨

Day Four of my intensive stone setting course at Jewellers Academy Brighton and today I was learning flush setting with the very helpful Hayley. 🙌🏾

This was the stone setting technique I really wanted to master before booking the course, so after a brilliant demonstration from Hayley, I was absolutely in my element! I successfully set two small round cubic zirconia without any issues. 🎉

But… never get too comfortable! 😂 It then took an age to successfully set the larger oval-shaped cubic zirconia. After having to start again, perseverance finally prevailed — Hip hip hip hooray! 🙌🏾💎

I may have been tested, but I’ve come away with the skills I wanted. Now it’s all about practice, practice, practice until I can make it look effortless!

Another fantastic day of learning, new skills and pushing myself outside my comfort zone. ❤️

✨ Day Three at the Jewellers Academy Brighton! ✨

Today we were introduced to collet setting a pear-shaped stone with the lovely Vicky. 💎

This has definitely been the most challenging setting of the course so far! There was A LOT of measuring, sawing, hammering, soldering and burring — and, as always, not quite enough hours in the day! 😂

I ran out of time before I could get to the pushing and burnishing, but I’ve learnt so many new skills today that I can take back to my studio and practise. That’s what I love about these courses — pushing myself outside my comfort zone and adding new techniques to my silversmithing toolbox. 🔨✨

No time to interact with the Brighton seagulls today… 🐦😂 but there’s always tomorrow!

Two more day to go! 💍✨

✨ DAY TWO – Stone Setting Intensive at Jewellers Academy Brighton ✨

Another fantastic day of learning, creating and getting to grips with the tiny details of stone setting! 💎

Today the amazing Amy taught us how to make a double gallery claw setting for round, pear and cushion-shaped cubic zirconia. It was fascinating learning how the setting is constructed and then bringing it all together — definitely a test of patience, precision and a steady hand! 🔨✨

I’m loving every minute of this course and picking up skills that I can’t wait to bring back to Silver by Golden. 💍

And of course… lunch was once again on the beach! 🌊☀️ Although today’s peaceful seaside lunch came with a little drama when I had to battle a very determined seagull to keep hold of my bagel! 🥯😂

Two days down, and I’m already looking forward to Day Three! 💎

✨ Day One at Jewellers Academy Brighton! ✨

What an absolutely amazing first day of my intensive stone-setting workshop at the Jewellers Academy in Brighton! 💎

I had such a wonderful time learning and creating alongside the amazing Rebekah, and I’m so pleased with my first tube claw set ring featuring this beautiful light blue CZ. 💍🩵

There’s something incredibly satisfying about learning a new skill and seeing a piece come together from a simple piece of silver to a finished piece of jewellery. I absolutely loved every minute of it!

And the day got even better… I was able to enjoy my lunch on the beach, just a stone’s throw (no pun intended! 😉🪨) from the studio. Not a bad place to learn the art of stone setting! 🌊☀️

Day one has definitely left me excited for what’s still to come. 💎✨

✨ 12 MONTHS OF SILVER BY GOLDEN ✨

Today I just want to say a huge THANK YOU 🙏🏾❤️

It’s been 12 months since I made the biggest career change of my life — leaving my teaching role after more than a decade and taking the leap into silversmithing full time.

What started as a dream has become a reality, and I honestly couldn’t have done it without all of you. Every customer I’ve met, every piece you’ve chosen, every kind word, recommendation, message and conversation has meant more to me than you probably realise. 🥹✨

Your support has given me the confidence to keep creating, learning and growing Silver by Golden — and has made this career change the best decision I have ever made.

✨ Restored to its former glory ✨

This beautiful gold & blue topaz ring arrived in my workshop in need of some serious TLC. The original ring shaft had broken and fallen away, and one of the smaller topaz stones was also missing from the cluster surrounding the stunning central stone.

The owner wanted to restore this much-loved ring to its former glory, so I carefully fitted a new ring shaft and replaced the missing topaz, giving this special piece a new lease of life. 💙✨

I was absolutely thrilled with the final result — but even more so was the owner! And that smile says it all. 🔥❤️

I love being able to breathe new life into jewellery that already has a story. Rather than being forgotten away in a jewellery box, treasured pieces can often be restored, repaired and loved all over again.
