Naomi Davies - Jewellery Design Workshop is in Kingsteignton. Naomi Davies - Jewellery is about creating jewellery that shines with class, quality and individuality.

I’ve 35 years experience making/teaching jewellery, a BA Hons in Jewellery and PGCE in Design and Technology, a member of Make Southwest, associate lecturer at Exeter College and run 14 years of workshops at Craft Festival. I am aware of embracing current fashion, which I follow with enthusiasm, but also strive to create pieces that are timeless in style. I enjoy working with all metals as well as

having experimented with marble and acrylic giving a classical quality. Music, especially stringed musical instruments continues to be an inspiration, using the contrast of circular curves and the tension of straight lines. I have also been heavily influenced by the simplicity and clean lines of traditional Japanese design.

Another term completed at Exeter College teaching advanced silver jewellery.
I focused on flush stone setting, tube setting and small scale sand casting, all of which was very time consuming but many new skills were learnt and some beautiful results achieved. Just want to say a huge thank you to my group for managing to stay the course and turning up and finishing on the hottest day on record. Soldering and casting in that heat last Wednesday was something else! 🔥😬😂

Something I have been working on for some time, 2 years in fact.
This is my homage to the Dartington Donkey sculpture designed and crafted by Willi Soukop, that stands by a path at the top of the gardens of Dartington Estate. It is much loved and has its own page. I think all the members of my family have photographs of us sat on it as children, and our children and now the next generation.
As a silversmith of course I thought how lovely it would be to have a mini silver version of it. The end result is from my wax carving from which I took one cast, which I then worked on, filing and using silver clay to attach the tiny ears.
Of course I explored the possibility of 3D printing and enlisted the help of a talented friend but technology just did not pair well with art. So I pursued alone, hoping my eyes and hands could do a good enough job!
It seemed rather an insult to the little fellow to interrupt it’s form by soldering a loop onto it’s back so I created a little museum like case to stand him in with plinth, a symbolic reference to the protection of our local heritage.
Last photo is me age 3 on the donkey. My mother and father, both artists often visited and brought the four of us to exhibitions at Dartington during the 1960’s and 70’s.
The acrylic case measures 40mm x 35mm for reference.

Due to changes that Sarah has made to workshop programme this year I regret I will not be to share my skills this year and sorry to all those that might have been looking forward to jewellery making as they are usually the first to sell out. I know how much joy the silver jewellery workshops have given so many learners over the years and all went away with their very own precious piece, and I loved and valued every single one, because they were made with such love and enthusiasm. I hope everyone has a great year at this wonderful event and hope to make an appearance at the MAKE Southwest tent where I am a maker member. I am always available for private workshops in my garden workshop on request!

Some tricky repairs and alterations I have recently worked on.
1. Silver bangle had split in the middle so I drilled a small hole to solder in wire to strengthen the joint when soldering the two halves together.
2. A beaded necklace where the inner wire had worn away and broken. I managed to find the exact same plastic coated wire to completely re thread all the beads to give it a new lease of life.
3. Sisters’ wanted their parents rings to wear, one was broken and both too small. Rather than melt them down together to make two new rings which would have lost the hallmarking history, I made both rings wearable.
I stretched one ring. The other needed an extra gold piece to make it bigger so I sawed off a section each side if the ring melted it down and used this piece to fill the gap. The result was two very similar 22 carat gold rings.

The results of my my Advanced Silver jewellery students work Exeter College this term.
We began with fabricating 3D formed rings which give the appearances of being cast but are fabricated from sheet. I loved seeing the different interpretations that developed from the basic shape . An enormous amount of work, patience and solder stages went into to each piece.
As a contrast we then went on to use set stones
of their choice within a wire structure.
Well done everyone and thank you for being such amazing students and turning up with such enthusiasm on those dark winter evenings! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✨✨✨
