aosdanaiona.com Aosdàna is a beautiful gallery & studio on Iona selling contemporary & traditional jewellery www.aosdanaiona.com

From the Gaelic, meaning people of the art, craft or gift, Aosdana is a beautiful gallery and working studio selling contemporary artwork alongside modern and traditional Iona jewellery. Housed in an old farm steading which has been lovingly restored by Iona stone mason, Colin MacDougall with interior features by Scottish artisans, the building alone is worth a visit. Aosdana is owned and run by l

ocal artist Mhairi Killin, whose aim is to combine the historical creativity of Iona with its contemporary equivalent. Aosdana continues the traditional work of Iona silversmiths Alex Ritchie (1856-1941) and Iain MacCormick (1917-1998) represented by the extensive range of reproduction designs on display. Each piece of jewellery is cast in sterling silver, hallmarked in Edinburgh and hand finished at the studio by local silversmiths. Inspired by Iona and using local stones, a modern range of jewellery is also on display. Aosdana also showcases some of the best contemporary silver smiths working in Scotland today. The range includes designs by Clare Hillerby, Sally Grant and Grace Girvan all recently shown at Collect and Origin, London. The jewellery is complemented by unique artwork; finely woven sculptures and wall pieces influenced by Scottish archaeology and created using delicately treated metals, wire and paper. Aosdana offers a truly unique experience on Iona as it combines the historical work of the Island’s past with the present and gives its vistors the chance to enjoy and support the creative energy of the Island.

Greetings from us all at Aosdàna at this mid point between the winter equinox and spring solstice.

The ancient Gaels followed a distinct way of understanding time-guided by natural rhythms, the movement of the sun, moon and the cycles of the land itself. Known as the Gaelic calendar, this system influenced far more than the measurement of days and seasons; it shaped patterns of living, ritual, celebration, and relationships with the spiritual realm.

The first day of February marks Imbolc, the beginning of Spring, and is associated with Brìde/Brigit, both a Celtic goddess, and a saint - Brigit of Kildare - who, along with Patrick and Columba is one of the three patron saints of Ireland.

There are many sacred wells and Christian sites throughout the Hebrides named for Brigit, but none on Iona. To learn more about her presence, and absence, in the Hebrides lose yourself for a while in the research of Glasgow University’s Iona Placenames project - just google the project and search for the blog for Brigit ✨

Appropriately for us at Aosdàna the goddess Brigit in Irish myth is associated with smithcraft - that is - silversmithing! Although we don’t have a cross in the design of the traditional woven Brigit’s cross, we do have many designs drawn from the early christian crosses on Iona. Mythical Goddess or patron Saint, Brigit’s day marks a welcome turn of the year towards spring.

To celebrate we are offering a special discount on all our Celtic Iona crosses 10% will be deducted from your choice of any piece from this collection at checkout.

Happy Imbolc! ✨

As Samhain arrives, we mark the turning of the year - in the old Gaelic calender 1st November marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. In Celtic tradition, this is when the boundary between the living and spirit worlds grows thin - a time to honour ancestors, tell stories, and prepare for the dark season ahead.

✨ Good things take time — and that’s exactly why we’re offering free worldwide shipping all November ✨

Order this month and we’ll guarantee Christmas delivery. It gives us the time to finish your jewellery with the care it deserves, and still reach your door in time to wrap💖

I’m really happy to say that the Iona Wee Moon is back! 🌙

A few years ago, I took a break from making moons, but I’m delighted to welcome them back to Aosdàna and to all our customers.

The Wee Moons began as part of a larger work I created in 2009 - Long Night Moon: The Rhythm of Remembrance - which charted the moon’s journey across a full year. I made it in memory of my mum, who passed away in 2000.

For many years, the work hung in the Aosdàna gallery, and something beautiful began to happen: people would find their own stories within it, noticing moons from the dates that mattered most to them - the birth of a child, a wedding day, or the passing of a loved one. From that, the idea of creating individual Wee Moons was born. Over time, I’ve made wedding moons, significant birthday moons, and family groupings, each one a small marker of memory and connection.

The original Long Night Moon now belongs to where it hangs in their ecumenical chapel as a point of contemplation.

If you’d like to commission a moon for a special date, or simply have a beautiful Iona New Moon like the one pictured just drop us an email for more information or follow the link in bio to order 🌕✨

THIS BEAUTIFUL BESPOKE RANGE OF TREASURES TAKES 4-6 WEEKS TO CREATE - ORDER BY END OF OCTOBER TO GUARANTEE DELIVERY FOR YOU KNOW WHEN ⛄️💙🤍💙

🤍 Grìogagan Cluaise CRIDHE GAOIL 🤍

🔹 Elegant heart-shaped drop earrings inspired by the iconic Acanthus leaf engravings found on historic Iona stone carvings, dating back to medieval times.

🔹This pattern was also widely used as a decorative element by Alexander & Euphemia Ritchie. The Ritchies’ own beloved heart pattern is featured here in person, thanks to digital 3D scanning technology, which has replicated the heart from the master pattern of a stunning handcarved spoon made by the Ritchies in c.1920. The heart pattern they created by hand has then been ‘pressed’ into the soft pillow-shaped earring, so the authentic memory and touch of the original craft is preserved while also reimagined into a modern, wearable treasure for today.

🔹The back of the earring features the original ‘IONA’ placename as handcarved by the Ritchies to provide a beautiful further memory of their inspiring Iona Celtic Art legacy.

🤍 Usgar Bràghad Mòr CRIDHE GAOIL 🤍

🔹Beautiful pillow-shaped heart pendant, inspired by the iconic acanthus leaf engravings found on historic Iona stone carvings, dating back to medieval times, and beloved by Iona artisans Euphemia & Alexander Ritchie.

🔹The Ritchies’ own handcarved heart pattern is featured here itself, thanks to digital art technology, used to scan and re-map a stunning handcarved spoon master pattern made by the Ritchies c.1920. The heart pattern they made has then been ‘pressed’ into the pillow-shaped pendant, so the authentic memory and touch of their original craft is preserved, while also reimagined into a modern, wearable treasure for today.

🔹The other side of the pendant features the original ‘IONA’ place name as carved by the Ritchies onto their jewels, to provide a beautiful further memory of the Iona Celtic Art legacy, and allow you to wear the pendant with either side facing forward.

🔹Available
