This beautiful, antique, butterfly pin bears the mark of ‘JA&S’. This is the mark of John Aitkin and Son of Birmingham, England. I am dating this butterfly to circa 1918.
The colours are very much of the period.
It is made of sterling silver with enamel and measures 1½” (4cms) across the top of the wingspan. It weighs 7.26 grams.
The enamelling is in pale lilac with a body in a contrasting darker shade It has bold black ovals with pale green centres and red dots. There are beautiful and realistic markings beneath the enamel and the lower part of the body is ribbed.
On the back is a solid old style, c clip . At top left is a serial number ‘2378’ and the ‘JA&S’ mark. The opposite side is marked a lttle faintly ‘Sterling Silver’.
This lovely butterfly is in fine antique condition with all the enamel intact. You can find it on both my Etsy and Ruby Lane online shops using the links in my bio and searching 'JA&S'.
