From a few reference photos to a finished engagement ring… here’s a little look bts so you get an idea of what its like to work with an independent jeweller 💛
Every bespoke piece starts with a conversation.
Then comes a sketch. An outline of a design. Once finalised, I was able to accurately quote for the project, taking into account the metal, gemstones and dimensions needed.
With everything approved, it was time to source the materials. The yellow sapphire was specially sourced for this commission, the diamonds i went to collect from Hatton Garden, and the 18ct gold was ordered ready for fabrication.
Then the real fun began 🤩
The ring started life as a length of square 18ct gold wire. I shaped it into a band, soldered it, and carefully filed it into its final profile so it felt elegant and comfortable to wear.
Next came the settings. I hand made the centre setting for the sapphire before assembling everything onto the ring band. The two smaller diamond settings were pre cast components, which many jewellers use for stones so small to keep their sanity intact!!
Once the structure was complete, I could move on to my fave part, setting the stones! The sapphire was set first, then the claws were shaped and refined, then the diamonds were set before giving the whole ring its final polish.
Well… “final” polish is a little misleading. For many, the piece is usually polished throughout each step of the making process, with each stage being refined before moving on to the next.
Watching this ring go from a few pieces of gold and loose gemstones to something that will be treasured for a lifetime has been incredibly rewarding.
