Forming Triangular Claws for Pointed Stones šŸ’Ž
ļæ½There’s more than one way to form a claw. In this clip, I’m using the v-groove section of a swage block to demonstrate how I shape claws for pointed stones.

It’s a reliable method that gives you strong, consistent results. I use other approaches too but I think this is one well worth knowing.

When I’m working with pointed stones like marquise, pear, or princess cuts, this is a useful approach.

I begin with a solid claw, cut into it, and push it over as normal, then refine the shape from above by filing.

This is how I approaching the making of these tapered baguette settings for this diamond ring in platinum!

I keep the two settings on a single plate for as long as possible to take advantage of the extra control (control=precision).

This is one way of going about it but I’m pleased with the result. Check out the full video on our YT channel (Goldsmith’s Workshop Secrets) where we go through the making of this ring from start to finish.

Any questions? Let us know below. We love hearing from you!

Making the underbezel for a pear diamond starts with finding the right curves.

My process is simple but precise:

1ļøāƒ£ Establish the largest curve firstļæ½2ļøāƒ£ Find an object with the same diameter (here I used a bangle triblet)ļæ½3ļøāƒ£ Form the smaller curve using half-round pliersļæ½4ļøāƒ£ Bring the ends together and pierce until the join forms the point

Slowly the pear shape emerges from a single piece of metal. It’s a satisfying moment when the geometry finally clicks into place.

A pear diamond already has movement in its shape so my thinking is that the claws should follow that rhythm.

Instead of forcing the curve with pliers, I start by forming a circle with platinum wire, then fold it. This gives two claws with natural symmetry and controlled movement.

Small details like this are what make a setting feel alive rather than mechanical. Traditional goldsmithing is often about finding simple ways to achieve elegant results.

Would you try this method?

In this step, I use the V-shaped space between two drilled holes and form a recessed claw. At this stage, the diamond won’t sit against the claw, and that’s intentional.

Later, I’ll cut roughly one-third into the claw, allowing the stone to seat securely.

Planning ahead and preparing the structure is important so that everything comes together precisely at the final stage.

I love how the tapered baguettes draw your eye straight to the pear-shaped diamond. We gave the setting a bit of height and openness so loads of light can get in and really let the stones do their thing. šŸ‘Œ
