This is the beautiful 'Monkroyd Cottage' (A.K.A swine lane Cottage), Pontefract Road, Featherstone. In it's prime.

The building exhibits classic features of Late Georgian to Early Victorian (circa 1830s–1850s) vernacular architecture. The shallow pitch of the hipped roof, the multi-paned sash windows, and the decorative cast-iron or wrought-iron veranda balcony are highly indicative of this transitional period.

While the building itself is 19th-century, the photograph captures a moment from the mid-20th century (likely late 1940s to 1950s). This is clearly evidenced by the clothing of the figures: the woman is wearing a classic mid-century A-line day dress, and the man is dressed in a traditional high-waisted waistcoat and trousers combination typical of post-war working/casual attire.

In 1976, the new Featherstone High School opened. This image shows the original sports centre and the front of the main building. There used to be a pond beneath the overhang, which was quite an interesting feature! Today, 5 of the planters remains (2026). The sports centre shown here was destroyed by fire in 2005 and rebuilt in 2007 at a cost of over £3 million.

This appears to be the only known image taken from inside the Hippodrome in Featherstone. It seems to show a children’s matinee, though the exact year is unknown.

One can’t help but wonder if they were watching a cartoon, a western, or perhaps an early Disney film.
