Straight lines or curves in the garden ?

It's a question I always ask my clients and one they are generally unsure how to answer as they think there is a right or wrong answer.

Straight lines tend to convey a more modern, contemporary and formal look whereas curves, more naturalistic and soft. Straight lines are generally easier to construct hence more cost effective and they make more efficient use of space whereas curves need a little more space to flow and can be used to hide features creating a sense of intrigue.

But, on the whole I tell my clients to go with what they prefer, what feels right to them and their sense of aethestic. As the designer it is up to me to create a garden that fits them and their budget; to reflect their personality and sense of practicality.

Things are incredibly busy right now both at my computer and out on site.

Not only am I working on some lovely new designs but work is ongoing for some of those gardens I designed last year. They are all at various stages of implementation and I love going to visit, seeing how each is progressing.

Work started on a new project this week so the clients are enjoying a slightly more brown garden than usual. Once spray painted out we can start to see how the garden is going to fit the garden in reality.

Once the paving is laid things are starting to take shape but it's all still a bit messy at this stage and there is a distinct lack of softness and greenery.

Once its ready for planting, the exicting bit happens and a new garden transforms into something much more three dimensional and tactile. This is my favourite bit as I get to be hands on in the soil !

And the final sign off when it all comes together and my client can start to enjoy and relax in their new garden.

We got Jo to do the planting as well as design which was a sheer joy to see the garden transformed and not have to do the back breaking work ourselves. Just had a few days in London and found this little gem in the heart of the Westminster district.

Love colour but are fearful of going bright and bold in your garden ?

Don't be !

Bright coloured walls, cushions, pots and accessories can bring a vibrancy and happiness to your garden that plants alone cannot achieve with an added bonus being that the colour remains all year round. Even on a dull, grey day a look outside at a mediterranean yellow wall is guaranteed to make you smile (as I know from personal experience !)

Working with colour in such an extravagant way can be slightly daunting though. Get it wrong and it can create the opposite effect of the intended.

Planting needs to compliment not clash so additional thought also needs to go into your plant scheme. The planting needs to be sympathetic to the dominant wall colour otherwise the overall feel can be too busy rather than an overall feel of calm.

A bit of blue sky at the beginning of the week makes everyone that little bit brighter and happier.

My Clematis Armandii is full of Apple Blossom blooms ready to burst, the dogs are out sunning themselves and Mr Heron paid us a visit. The garden is beckoning us to enjoy the delights of being outdoors but is yours fit for purpose ?

Love these Crocus 'Dorothy' that were the top layer of this years bulb lasagne. Could have done with lots more in there though.

They were co-ordinated with my yellow wall to bring some early colour and sunshine to an otherwise gloomy February.
