WW2 HISTORY - At Zero West, we design watches with real meaning, and the S5e Spitfire Escape is a great example of this.

The S5e is a contemporary design inspired by the “Dirty Dozen” watches commissioned by the British Ministry of Defence during World War II, when twelve separate watch brands were tasked with manufacturing the same military watch. The S5e echoes their clarity, reliability and purpose, bringing the spirit of those simple, rugged front-line tools into a contemporary Zero West timepiece.

But this watch is so much more than a field-watch-inspired design. It commemorates RAF pilot Sandy Gunn and Spitfire AA810, the famous photo-reconnaissance aircraft he was flying when he was shot down over the Norwegian fjords. Sandy was later imprisoned in the camp immortalised by the Hollywood film The Great Escape — yes, the one with Steve McQueen. He spent a year helping to dig one of the escape tunnels, “Harry”, and although he initially escaped, he was later recaptured and executed.

As a quiet tribute to that story, each S5e carries a piece of Spitfire AA810 built into the side of the watch. It is a small but meaningful detail that connects the timepiece directly to the aircraft, the mission and the man behind the story, true history on the wrist, as we like to say at Zero West.

One of the best parts of exhibitions is the mix of people you meet, from customers and first-time visitors to the brand, to media and potential collaborators. Recently, we met Neil and Mark, aka The Watch Brothers, who took our L3 and L4 Longitude for review.

They really got what we’re about as a British independent watchmaker, and the attention to detail that makes us different. Their photography and write-up are well worth a look, and they’re definitely worth a follow.

We’re constantly blown away by the photos you share from all over the world. From Spitfire flights and vintage Rolls-Royces to watch collections in Dubai, right down to Time & Tide in Melbourne, it’s very rewarding seeing these come in.

We build these unique timepieces to carry real meaning, and it means a lot that this resonates with so many of you. We’re really grateful for the community around Zero West and looking forward to sharing some exciting projects over the rest f the year.

In the meantime for everyone in the UK, have a great weekend in the sunshine! and keep those photos coming. #

This past weekend, Zero West was in support of Aces High Gallery in Steventon, Oxfordshire for their Vulcan event. The day was a celebration of aviation history, with a fantastic talk by Bill Perrins, a Vulcan pilot involved in the Falklands/Operation Black Buck mission. Bill was launching his book, "From Vulcan to Spitfire and Back," and we had the privilege of a one-on-one chat with him about his RAF career. We spoke about our new Vulcan timepiece, and it incorporating metal from XM607 which Bill was the last pilot to fly!

A big thank-you to Aces High for an incredible event attended by around 200 people, and to Bill for his time, stay tuned for an interview landing soon!

At Zero West, a lot of watch design still starts the old-fashioned way… pen, paper, and a sketch pad. From there it moves onto the computer, where we can create photo-realistic renders of new ideas. But one of the most enjoyable parts happens over at Z-Branch the R&D wing of Zero West.

This is where our designs come to life through 3D printing, allowing us to produce highly accurate watch models before a single piece of metal is machined. It gives us a real-world feel for proportions, details, and how a design truly sits in the hand.

Of course when you’ve got kit like this in-house, it’s very easy to get distracted as these photos show along with models of our watches… distractions include mini Rolls-Royce engine, Spitfire pilot and even the odd spaceman!

Dreams do come true….
One of our customers Mark Edwards who always wanted to fly in a Spitfire since he was a boy, finally got this dream last week. Taking off from Goodwood under sunny blue skies they flew across the Solent, over to the Isle of Wight and around the famous Needles.

And yes, of course, he was accompanied by his Zero West S4 Spitfire on the wrist. Very fitting for an unforgettable flight 🇬🇧

We were really excited for him. We get Spitfires flying over our studio this time of year with their distinctive Merlin engine sound, so who knows, we may even have looked up and seen you fly past.

He described it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience… although apparently he’s already saving up to do it again!

Great to see one of our watches being part of such a special moment.

At Zero West, we do things differently to most watch brands. When you’ve spent quite literally hundreds of hours designing a watch from the ground up, developing your own unique case architecture, engineering every detail, and obsessing over how each component works together, you don’t hand the final stages over to someone else. That’s why we build, assemble, and test our timepieces in-house.

Each AV1 Vulcan pilot watch is built by hand in our workshop, where every component is carefully assembled, inspected, and regulated with absolute precision. From the fit of every part to the final adjustment of the movement, we obsess over the smallest details, because a watch carrying this much history deserves engineering to match.

A busy day in the Zero West offices today ! At Z-Branch today we are manufacturing chapter rings for AV1 Vulcan. These rings are produced from the skin of XM607 which is undergoing restoration at RAF Waddington. A historical aircraft, XM607 was part of the Black Buck raid on Port Stanley during the Falklands conflict. At the time, it was the longest bombing run in history and well worth reading up about if you haven't already.

Manufacturing these rings is quite challenging as the skin is warped and corroded in parts from the 44 years the aircraft had been sitting outside since the conflict. We select the best sections to take our material, then run it through rollers to flatten and straighten. Cutting it into strips and then 40mm squares.

From that point it's onto the lathe where each process takes place, from turning the cut sections to the outside diameter to facing off and then boring out the finished inside diameter. After the lathe work is complete we end up with a ring of XM607 1 mm thick by 2.4mm in width. The ring is then grained and cleaned, ready for the next stage.
