All the way from Australia, Margie came to the Kilt Loft after making two kilts online with me.

What a compliment that she was willing to travel all this way to build on what she’d already learned and spend more time learning the finer details of bespoke kilt making. ✨

✨ Day 6 of the 12-day course! ✨

This week has been amazing so far!

Margie has travelled all the way from Australia to join me for some in-person training after studying online with me. She brought along a kilt she made during her online learning, and I have to say, I’m in awe of the work she’s produced virtually! Just a couple of wee tweaks to make it perfect. ❤️

Then we have Isy, making her very first kilt and absolutely loving the process so far. And Morag has joined us for a few days to make her first kilt with me, too.

Three lovely ladies, all at different stages of their kilt-making journey, sharing the learning, the challenges, the wee wins and, of course, plenty of chat along the way!

I feel so privileged to be able to share my knowledge and passion for this amazing heritage craft with such enthusiastic women. Watching their skills grow and seeing them create something with their own hands is what it’s all about for me. 🧵❤️

And we’re only halfway through! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings. 🪡🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

✨Out of office ✨

This has been on my vision board for years!

A trip to Portugal to visit my mum in her home 🏠

It’s going to be a wee reset after working hard with The Kilt Loft and growing an amazing kilty community ❤️

I will be opening my doors for online training again next year, changing the format slightly , there is going to be a waitlist for in- person and 12 day courses on request.

See you all in 2 weeks ❤️

✨Bespoke tweed creation ✨

Look what the fabulous Julia made for her second creation here at The Kilt Loft! ❤️

Tweed and denim, designed around what Julia wanted — and, to be honest, we pretty much went with it as we made it! 😂

I love this part of teaching. You learn the traditional rules, understand why things are done a certain way… and then you can start to break them just a little and have a creative play!

Because once you understand the rules, that’s when the fun really begins. 😍
And I think Julia has created something rather fabulous here!

I haven’t posted much recently, but that certainly doesn’t mean things have been quiet at the Kilt Loft! ❤️

This photo is full of some of the recent student kilts that have been made in my classes — and I’m so proud of every single one of them.

My classes have been full since last year, which is just incredible. I’m so thankful that my students love the learning process, enjoy the challenge, and are inspired to create their own beautiful kilts. Watching their skills grow and seeing those first kilts come together is honestly one of the best parts of what I do. 🥰

So… I’m taking a wee break! My yearly trip!

I’m off to London tomorrow for a week, and I’m very much looking forward to putting the sewing down for a few days and enjoying some time away , giving my brain a little holiday too! 😂

I’ll be back next week refreshed, inspired and ready for more kilt making. ❤️

A wee collection of the work through the Kilt Loft during July ❤️

This month brought 4 first kilts, 1 second kilt… and the orange one is mine, among others.⭐️

I always like to be completely open about the beautiful work being produced here and to celebrate my students properly, because making a kilt is not easy. Every finished kilt represents patience, learning, problem solving, determination, and hours of thoughtful work.❤️

I truly believe that smaller classes and my online instruction help make that journey feel more achievable and supported.
For me, kilt making is as much about problem solving as it is sewing. After 20 years of studying and practising the craft, we try to solve the challenges before the needle even touches the cloth. ✨

We think about the person who’ll wear the kilt — their proportions, shape, length, and how the garment will move and sit. It becomes personal before we even start thinking about the finer details. ⭐️

And then… the details speak for themselves.
Taking time to really think about what will elevate each kilt is one of the most joyful parts of the process. These are not rushed garments — they are considered, crafted, and created with purpose. ❤️.

I’m incredibly proud of every single one created this month ✨

Online and in-person combined ❤️

Last week I had the absolute joy of having one of my online students in the Kilt Loft to start her SECOND kilt and continue her training… and I’m still smiling about it!

For those who don’t know, my online course is taught through step-by-step video tutorials, carefully created to guide you through the process using everything I’ve learned through 20 years of studying and developing my craft.

And this photo… this is Vivien’s work from following those videos.
Honestly… my mind is blown 🤯❤️

Is this kilt perfect? No.
Should a first kilt be perfect? Also no.

A first kilt is about learning. Understanding. Building skills. Discovering just how much goes into creating a proper hand-crafted bespoke kilt. Every stitch teaches you something.

But what this proves to me is that the combination of detailed teaching and a dedicated student really works. All the hours spent creating and delivering these tutorials are worth it when I see work like this.

And the fact that Vivien wants to come into the Loft, train alongside other students, keep learning, and become part of this community… that means so much to me ❤️
You never stop learning in this craft. That’s the beauty of it. We learn together, support each other, share knowledge and keep improving with every kilt.

I’m so proud of Vivien and absolutely delighted with this beautiful work. On to kilt number two ✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
