From a coin to a ring.. transforming a Maria Theresa Thaler into a turbine ring for a client.

The finished ring. One crisp shiny edge, one softly curved. Chunky, weighty and feels great to wear.

Lots of cleaning up..

Maria Theresa Thaler coins.. the beginning

From one coin to one ring. The process of recycling silver and one of the best things about working in precious metal. Nothing is wasted, scrap is carefully saved, old pieces can be re-melted and re-worked.

Part 2: making a silver ring from an old Maria Theresa Thaler coin.

Sandcasting, a lesson in trying again.. and again. Cleaning up and preparing for hallmarking. Part 3 will take a week or two, I’ll update you once the ring is back from the assay office.

Part 1: transforming a silver Maria Theresa Thaler coin into a ring.

Some facts about the Maria Theresa Thaler;
- The Thaler is a silver bullion coin first minted in 1741 and it features Empress Maria Theresa of Austria.
- The coin was used as a global currency in the Middle East and Africa and as a result, every coin minted after 1780 has the mark ‘1780’. This mark is frozen in time to make it recognisable and trusted in foreign markets.

I will use the process of sand casting to rework the coin into a ring and will share my process as I go.. follow for part 2.

Recently in the studio.. playing with new shapes. I’ve been finding a lot of freedom in working intuitively in paper to find forms.

I’m working on a small group of new pieces to show at Open studio. (At least.. if I say it enough, it will give me the accountability to make it happen!) 🖤

Some things that I have been working on in the studio lately. I’ve been testing new shapes and playing with techniques. Teaching for the year has finished so I’m getting more time for deep creative focus. (I teach part time at ECA Jewellery & Silversmithing Department).
I’m brimming with ideas for new work and will share my progress here.

Watch this space. ✨

A little re stock of the wave hoops in gold plated silver. A perfect little everyday hoop earring.

Every so often I challenge myself to develop a piece that you want to reach for every day, that’s easy to wear, that is simple yet interesting. These earrings belong to that family of designs. I use myself as the ultimate tester.. a few years since I first made these and I’m still reaching for them 〰️

This piece found its way to its new home recently so I’ve been thinking about the next iteration that I will make of this design. With each necklace in this style, I have made a slight variation; different gauge, a different scale, a different texture. It gives each one a different feeling.

I like this because it makes each piece unique in a subtle way. It brings a different sense of life to each one and it means that you know that the necklace that you own is the only one with its particular character.
